I thought mine ran very well with the Bloatware, but it's amazing how much better it runs without the bloatware, even if you think it won't run any better. I'd still recommend you do the clean install. It'll probably help in the long run too when your PC starts to become average rather than blisteringly quick :p. The lack of bloatware will help that little bit; assuming you don't use it that it. The only thing I put back on was the Synaptsis(sp?) software for the touchpad.

    ERRRR ...

Received a wonderful Dell automated phone call this morning ...

I originally ordered on Mar 22.

"Your order has been back ordered ... "

    ERRRR ...

But there was light at the end of the tunnel in that I noticed BluRay is now available for the Studio's.

So I cancelled my order ... they knocked $50 off, I added a BluRay R/W, and they gave me free next day shipping again.

New EDD is now May 4 ... which completely sucks ... but after all is said and done ... this was the system that I wanted.

They said there is currently a 20 day lead time on the 1080P monitors ...

See my signature for system details ...

When you get the laptop it'll have it on the invoice. They detail every single component in the laptop, and it should say something like Studio 1558 Chassis. It'll be the 3rd or 4th item down in the list.

Oh man, with comments like this, I just want to bite. Just spent a few hours the other day getting it set up right too. I do like the dell dock thing tho. Can you get it back separately if I format it? And what about the onscreen items for volume/brightness - is there a download available for those? Perhaps they're on the discs that I sidelined?!

How'd you go about formatting? Can I just shove in my other pucca windows 7 home premium disc and boot into it and format away? I understand obviously that I'll need to use the key under the battery.

I didnt install the onscreen info for the volume etc. I actually forgot! so kudos to you for reminding me. The dell dock you can download from their website I'd imagine. By the way, I used to use RocketDock on my Xp system, it's the same concept as the dell dock. I haven't got either on here because i like the startbar on this w7, and with a 1080 screen it makes little difference whether or not i actually hide of taskbar of not.

You can get the laptop back to how dell give it to you by using both discs (w7 disc + driver&util disc). The w7 disc gives you a normal clean version of w7 with no dell-ness attached. you then upgrade a couple of drivers from the dell disc which is easy enough to use and you're setup. It'll take 30 mins to format imo.

How'd you do it? Simple. Put the w7 disc in, restart the computer and boot from the cd drive (dont forgot to change the boot order in the BIOS). It'll read from the w7 disc and select the partition with w7 installed on it, click 'format', it'll reset the GB count to something like 268 or whatever excluding the dell recovery partition which si ~10gb (i got a 320GB HD). Then click the option to do a clean format, it'll say no settings etc will be saved, do this one. Backup your stuff in advanced btw, dont forget. Installation takes less than 15 mins.. then you just set it up with the PC name etc.. all done. Then do as i said in the above paragraph about the drivers.. feel free to ask if you need any additional info.

If you use the dell w7 disc you dont need to enter any serials btw, makes it ncie and easy and quick.

Couldn't you also simply uninstall all the unwanted bloatware? Is there bloat installed that you can't uninstall without a clean wipe?

    Thanks.

It is certainly better to uninstall than leaving it there but is not as good a complete reformat and reinstall. Once all that junk it installed uninstalling it still leaves remnants behind. If you use a good uninstaller along cccleaner to clean up your registry you would be pretty close. But as fast as W7 installs I just reinstall and call it a day. That way I know my system is as clutter free as possible.

    @dimodi

I did speedfan test for temperature and got 65 C max. Touchpad does get little warm but nothing uncomfortable.

The laptop is working flawlessly till now. I did do some video coding and CAD simulations and it was really very fast. My main reason to buy core-i7 was for video coding and CAD/EM modelling and it is doing it brilliantly ..

Jako and all, thanks for the detailed breakdown off where to get the various apps.

I'll clear out Sunday to wipe it and install from scratch. I do like the idea of a bloatware minimalist free installation.

I have begun to notice that it does take a while to bootup so any speedup is welcome.

Once you register your computer with Dell then you can download the softwares which came with your computer. McAfee is one of them. However its an good idea if you contact the dell support and ask about it.

I've just had a look into this. If you login to the mcafee site https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx using the email/pwd you used to register, there is an option to download the software.

    Give that a whirl.

@vladmoney What status is your order? You could probably cancel over the phone if it's still "processing".

I went for bluetooth as I use an external bluetooth mouse. I didn't want to get a wireless one which meant I needed a dongle in their permanently.

I just can't get the hang of touchpads for sustained work. It drives me nuts!

yeh I agree. Touchpads are a bit irritating.

Moving slightly off topic, I've noticed I have 4 unknown devices in my device manager... ive attached a screenshot showing each one of them. Left to right = is movign from top to bottom in device manger.
    I need to know:
    a) do the rest of you have these unknown devices?
    b) could any of you kindly identify what these devices are so i can download the drivers... w7 doesn't seem to be able to identify them; thanks.

    Yesterday I've ordered mine!

    Specs:
    i5-520
    ati 5470
    1080P screen
    4 gb ddr3
    500 gb 5400 rpm
    wireless b/g

737 euro's inc delivery, nice price imo.

But is it normal that I can't see my orderstatus yet? Dell orderstatus tells 'We can't show a status on this ir number' The orderstatus service is not down, but it just doesn't see my order.

@alibabba The dell status goes a bit mental from time to time. I'd just try later on.

@dimodi here are the device manager listings from Dell before I wipe it clean! You may be able to spot what's different. There's hundreds (ok, I exaggerate) of items under System devices tho.

    Ignore the external HD.

Don't know if any of you remember, but I wrote a letter of complaint to Dell regarding my fiasco with the lack of a 6300 on my new order to replace the order they cancelled. I had to fork out £35 to get the 6300 where others got them by default.

Well, it always pays to complain when you've experienced poor service. They just called me and advised they would refund me £45.

    Result.

Have just formatted my Dell and am busy installing drivers, etc.

Anyone what Intel Rapid Storage Manager ver. 9.6.0.1014 is? It mentions stuff to do with the floppy disc?!

That's what I did. Dell Win7 install, uninstalled their crap using PC Decrapifier, ran CCleaner 3 times to make sure it cleaned out all the crap, and then installed the software I wanted as well as transferring over the files.

Is it as good as a clean install? Probably not but I didn't feel like reinstalling all my apps for the 3rd time in 6 weeks (yes, 3rd Studio 1558). Figured I would get around to a clean install about a year after I use it when it starts to feel like a marathon runner with a broken foot. ;)

If I remember correctly when I did my reinstall of Win7 on my 1558, there are 3 Intel drivers listed on the Dell driver CD. Install all 3 and this should resolved your issue. Off the top of my head, and without caffeine, I cannot remember the actual name of the driver you need to "fix" this.

Yes, uninstall the Intel turbo boost driver, it's not compatible with i7-720 cpu, it has nothing to do with turbo boost monitor which is compatible. After restart system will replace it with other Intel driver.

Yea its in production. I wanted bluetooth so I can transfer stuff to and fro my phone. But just buying the transfer cable would be cheaper anyway and I don't want to cancel the order and wait another 4 weeks for it to arrive.

You're a legend mate. I'm going to compare mine and yours now.. thanks a million, will follow up on my findings.
Result indeed.. did this all happen following your initial complaint? or did you persistently complain for the past week or two until they followed up. I remember you saying you had to fork out extra cash for your unit, was roundabouts the 2nd week of march irrc

I have the i3 version of this laptop with the intel graphics accelerator. Do any of you have issues with your cpu fan spinning up every thirty seconds? Mine spins up twice a minute for just 10 seconds and then shuts down even when the computer is idle! I checked my cpu temps, and they're less than 40 degrees. Anyone know how to fix this? I even set my power scheme to passive cooling, minimum graphics performance, and 75% processor power with no luck. There are other threads on here detailing the problem with no fixes :(

    @ ZEDPOS>>>
Regarding my issue: I updated the Ricoh Memory Stick / Card controller. That eliminated two of the four Unknown devices. I still have two more which I can't pinpoint. I noticed you have a number of Bluetooth devices that I don't have as I didn't get my laptop with bluetooth. Also I noticed you have a HID Keyboard controller under your keyboards, which I don't.

    @ COOLGUY >>>
Reckon you could put up an image of your expanded device manager? You have the closest spec system to me and i think I'll be able to identify the missing drivers easier. Let me know, thanks a lot in advanced!

UPDATE @ZEDPOS: Identified one more of the unknown devices as the Intel Management Engine Interface; now I'm truly struggling to find out what it is.

    Some observations:
    - I don't have a HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES entry in my device manager.
    - I don't have a HID Keyboard Device under Keyboards.
    - I don't have a Microsoft Virtual Miniport Adapter or VMware Virtual Ethernet under Network Adapters
    - I don't have a Virtual CloneDrive
    - I don't have any of the bluetooth entires you have

I doubt its any of the above, for some reason, however the following two stand out to me:
    - I don't have the ST Micro Accelerometer in my System Devices
    - I only have 2 Generic USB Hub's, you have 3.

    What you think?

Might be that ST Accelerometer. Didn't know this laptop had one?! Must be for the hard drive...

EDIT: WOOP. Thanks a lot Zedpos. It was the Ricoh Memory card reader, the Intel Management Engine, and the ST Accelerometer. All fixed now, good stuff! :D
