It should be possible. But A06 had BSOD problems, I wouldn't do it :)

So I Just ordered a new Dell Studio 1558 on 7/29, and the expected delivery date is 8/17. (I got the 2 day shipping)

I got it primarily for gaming (Total War Series and Civilizaton are my faves) and media i.e. music, video (movies and anime), photos, etc.

    Here are the Specs:

    -i7-740QM 1.73 - 2.93Ghz
    -8GB RAM
-500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive
-ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 1GB
    -Full HD 1080p Screen
    -Windows 7 Home 64-Bit

    And some Features:

    -9 Cell battery (Standard)
    -Intel 6250 Wireless-N w/WiMAX
    -Backlit Keyboard

+Sea Sky by Mike Ming (Back Art)

Is there anything I should worry about?

Any accessories I should get to keep my laptop in good shape?

Is there anybody with any experience with the WiMAX wireless card? If so, how is it?

Anybody know how accurate dell's predicted delivery dates are?

It came out to $1471 ($1605.51 after tax and S+H)

It took me 6 and 1/2 months to save for it...

I'm DYING to have it with me in my house.

$1600. Did you use any coupon?
You should call Dell and upgrade your shipping to overnight. I did that when my Studio 17 was still building(I called to find out the exact status of my laptop in production) and the lady offered me free overnight shipping like it was natural.

    P.S.
Make sure you get some kid of shield/skin for your lappy. I think zagg is offering 50% off if you sign up. I've heard some good things about their invisible shield.

OHHH ZAGG!! YES!! I have an invisible shield on my itouch, and It won't scratch even if I scrape it with my keys. I'll definitely order one.

And is it that ridiculous? it was $1471 before taxes and S+H.
and no I used no coupons...
    I didn't know about any :(

AND HRMMM. That sounds niicee, free upgrade huh? I'll definitely call them then.

    $1600 seems kind of steep.
I don't know what kind of coupons are available now. I used $100 off on mine.

The BSOD I got (once in 2 weeks) was caused by ATI graphics adapter and after waking from sleep (comp. not me ). And I haven't had this problem with A08

I know ATI is to blame :D I have special thing in past with those naughty ATI cards.

    1. If I get a Studio 1558 with 720QM or a dual core, is there any chance that I will hear CPU whine?

    2. It is not going to throttle with A06 from factory, or I need to get the 130W adapter?

    3. Is the 1647 XPS worth the price difference for build quality and reliability (where I live a 1558 with 720QM is $1400 and a 1647 XPS is $1800 but comes with a 520M and a slower video card (it's called 565v?))

565v is much better card than the one in studio 1558.. it is hd 4670

u will get a choice of hd 4670 or hd 5730 and both are very good..

recheck on the config of studio xps... 1800$ seems a lot... u could get core i7 and the above mentioned gfx cards.. easily on tht range.. (unless you r trying for a huge warranty offer)

xps is a better built in my opinion.. better specs..and 130w adapter
    :)

In my country you cannot configure, just buy from about 2 or 3 different models. Warranty is 3 years by default. I will look into it, thanks. For gaming at least it would require a 5650 or a 5730, but I still don't know what model has what card (stupid reseller system here).

I think his screen was defective, but that doesn't matter since you got the FHD 15.6'' that is used on AW m15x and SXPS 16. :)

    hello man
dont go with dell then... i have gone through some of the hungarian sites of sony , lenovo, MSI, and found out the following laptop tht u can try
    lenovo ideapad z series
MSI offers a great deal of gaming laptops over there
sony also offers some good configs for gaming... check e series and f series..

my preference MSI for gaming.. u will get a good config MSI with the same amount of money of a studio xps
    :)

Can someone tell me how long the battery life is? I mean assuming you are using it to run applications and play music and run programs with wireless on. What about it using the 9 cell battery?

Also, is black the best color? I looked at the colors and i think spring green looks the best. Can someone who have the spring green color tell me if its good? I know things look a lot different online as oppose to the naked eye.

Battery life depends on the battery capacity, whether there is a discrete GPU, and processor speed. For my config, I can get 4 hours. It'd probably be faster to do a search than wait for a response that mimics the specs you're looking at, especially since you haven't listed any.

Color is very subjective. It's not just about the eye. None of the colors/patterns look "bad" as long as someone out there thinks it looks fine.

Unlike other Dells where the 9-cell battery protrudes behind the laptop, the Studio 15 puts the extra cells beneath it with small rubber feet sticking out which makes it uncomfortable to use on your lap.

Is anyone else having issues with static coming from the headphone jacks on the Studio 1558?

I notice that if I "mute" the sounds in windows the static stops, and if i increase/decrease the volume, the volume of the noise changes as well.

The noise starts as soon as windows is booted, and appears even when no sounds are being played by the computer.
I've installed the newest audio drivers as well as the newest bios. What else can I do?

    Hi geeks,

Please help me decide between studio15 and vostro 3500.
The thing confusing me is the studio 1080 p/ vostro 720p and the graphic card option of studio-5470 1gb /vostro 310M 512 Mb.
other specs are the same. please comment which has a better build quality.

    Thanks in advance.

Just ordered my 1558 after lots of reading in here (got through a lot of the 115 pages!) was on the fence for a week or so but then took the plunge since I couldn't find another laptop with Blu-Ray and 1080P screen at the same price point.

Here's what I ordered for $1080CAD incl taxes & shipping which I was pretty happy with for what I need.

Core I5 450M, 320GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Full HD Screen, Centrino 6200 Wireless, BD Drive

The deals in Canada to get the I5 520 or I7 720 are really good too, but even though it would only have ended up being about $100-$200 more, increasing to those would have put me over the budget (and way overkill on what I need!).

Are the Intel Cantiga and Intel Mobile chipset drivers needed? I have not installed either. Do I need to?

Also, under some of the drivers listed, many say, "See Atachment". I have yet to figure out where that info is located.

    Thanks in advance!

So my deal above got cancelled as I was told that the Blu-Ray was "incompatible". Not 100% sure what that means or why. I'm guessing that the Studio 15 I ordered wasn't a 1558 (it doesn't say anywhere that it is), were previous iterations of the Studio 15 compatible with Blu-Ray? Does anyone know if all builds of the 1558 are compatible as I know for sure I can order the 1558 from the main page and ignoring coupons etc.

I'm still trying to get customer service to properly explain and help me out.

The mobile chipset drivers are already installed from the factory; you only need to update them if a newer version comes out. Likewise, if you do a clean install of Windows, you'd need to install them.

I think the 'attachments' are in the folder where the driver will unzip its files (see C:\dell\drivers).

Got my brother to order a 1558 a couple of days ago. Dell Canada had it with the i7-720, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB HDD, and Radeon HD 5470 1 GB for $899 CAD plus taxes. I was really impressed that he was able to get an i7 machine for that price! I figured he could always upgrade the RAM and HDD later so this was the best way for him to go. Thoughts?

I think I have seen some manufactures recommend you have an I5-520 minimum if you have Blu-Ray.

Back when I ordered my Studio 15, I got it with a Blu-Ray burner. Of course I had to get 1080P to if I was going Blu-Ray ... looks and plays great!

    Hi,

I just got my Studio 1558 today, and was wondering is it normal for the power brick to get really hot when in use? It's not just warm to the touch but actually hot, a tad worrying.

Also, for GPU updates, I've the 545v but am not sure what drivers to get from the ATI website, the 4000 series ones (as it is just a reskin of the 4570) or the 5000 series one.

    Cheers for any help!

Its low resolution turned me away. It's a real shame they didn't offer it with FHD. :(

Hi, my power brick gets quite hot, the first brick I had made a loud clicking noise and I had it replaced and my new one still gets quite hot under load, so I think it's normal enough. If you're worried about it, just call them up and ask for a replacement, they should just send one out to you.

The 545v is a renamed 4570, so you can get the 4000 series drivers, that's what I use.

Good luck with your studio :)

Can any of you new owners of the 1558 with FHD screen run pc wiz or everest to find out which panel is being used now? Do they still use LG LP156WF1 or did they switch to AUO B156HW01? I haven't seen the 15.6'' AUO in person, but I was told it is terrible unlike their 17'' FHD models.

Thank you! Too bad it's only for the US market... for now. And I think 1920x1080 is pretty unreadable on 14" laptop. I'm pretty sure there isn't technology to mass produce such screens

I ordered mine on Thursday, it arrived yesterday. Spec wise I've an i5-430m, 4GB RAM, ATI 545v, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, Blu-ray drive and a 3 year warranty on it for £600.

I got mine from an eBay seller, not the outlet.

Cheers, I'll go grab the 4000 series drivers then :) I went to download ones from the Dell website but when I went to install them you could just about catch the end of the description, and it said they were for the 3400 series  Very odd.

Might email Dell about a new power brick, and mine does get worryingly hot, might try and take a temperature reading later on of it if I can.

Spoke to tech support and neither of them are supported or needed on my system (that is similar to yours).

The first thing I do is a clean install...

Well basically i have had a Studio 1558 for a month or 2 now. It has a HD4570 graphics "card".

The problem is whenever i play games on it, it will be fine for anywhere between 10 mins and a couple of hours then it will suddenly start lagging to the point of being unplayable.

I have a widget that shows the cpu load, while playing the game normally only the first core is maxed out and the rest are pretty low (10-20%). When it starts lagging they all shoot up to 100%.

A couple of days ago i decided to download CPUID to check the temperatures of the CPU and GPU. The CPU goes to about 70 degrees playing the game but the graphics card is up at about 100 degrees. I haven't had it lagging while having CPUID running so i'm not sure if that is the cause of it or not. Either way 100 degrees seems really high. Even at idol its sitting at 60-70 degrees.

Are these temperatures normal for the Studio 1558?

Anyway i followed the instructions on the dell user manual and took the laptop to bits to see if the cooling fins were blocked. The gpu is covered by some chunky aluminium fins and a heat pipe which heads towards the fan but does not thermally connect to anything, so there is no fan assisted cooling for the GPU.

I don't know much about cooling so this might be a daft question, but shouldn't the heat pipe be connected to something?

So basically I want to know if the heating is the most likely cause of the lagging, and if 100 degrees is normal for a laptop GPU.

    Thanks in advance

More like there's not enough demand. I love my friend's Vaio Z screen. It's only 13'' and FHD.

I ran PC Wizard and my specs are below.

My ambient room temp is 75F and GPU is 53C. CPU 41 & 36C. What is you room temp? What CPU?

The heat pipe does not connect to anything. The heat pipe's job is to move the heat away from the GPU. In such a small space it does have much room to transfer it away. I have a large heat pipe on my mainboard on my desktop and it's very effective.

Edit: My laptop sits on top of the Belkin CushTop and the 9 cell battery elevates it just enough for better air flow.
