i think its gddr3 ... its performance is some what similar as the old mobility radeon hd 4570 (gddr3) in dell studio 1557. if its a gddr5 version then the performance will be much better (haven't seen the gddr5 version though )
correct me if i am wrong
dell 1558 users pls post the gpu-z pic of mobility radeon hd 5470
    :)

it monitors if there is too much vibrations or movement on a computer, such as if the computer is being dropped or being quickly moved around, so that when it occurs it parks the head of the hard drive so the hard drive would not get damaged. Hope that helps.

Hey, I have 1920x1080 on my laptop screen (native), and 1680x1050 on my second screen (samsung 22" - native also). I literally just plugged it in and it runs the way it does.

    What exactly is your issue??

Just upgraded to A06, and video drivers 10.6. I decided to do this a bit later than most as my configuration has been generally very stable. Had my first GPU freeze about 30 mins ago so decided to go ahead with the flash and driver update. Will update ya'll if anything crops up - I'd imagine most of you are already running this setup though.

A glance at my temps has resulted in some mild satisfaction - CPU currently 45 degrees, whilst GPU is currently 49. VERY low for me, normally I'd expect 60 and 65 respectively. Might be due to the cool evening breeze (almost 10pm here London time)

    - D :D

im thinking about buying a dell after having a bad exp. w/ an HP DM4

    heres my configurations:
    http://i30.tinypic.com/24pl1sn.jpg

    a few questions:

-should i get 6 gigs of ram? i'll be using it for light gaming, photo editing, school, etc

    - is the HD easy to switch out? i plan on a getting an SSD in the near future

    - i own a couple of dells from the past and i havent kept up with their recent reliability, i have a 1 yr basic warranty, do u think i should upgrade? i bought warrantys before and never had to use em

    - will the upgrade from 720p to 1080p HD screen make a big difference? i am going to be using photoshop a lot*

    - overall would u say this is a good deal? or can a similar config be found a better price either at a 14" or 15" screen? or better coupon avail

    thnx

    Hi friend,
    Thanks for reply me .

the problem is that when I run it as "extended mode" ( to my Dell 22' monitor) I just can get 1600x1200 not 1680x1050 as I wish .
I download all drivers( ATI center) and nothing!

I tested it with my inspiron 1525 and a sony vaio , and there, its ok , I can get more than 2000x1200

My native is 1366x768 but I will use just in a extended mode...

    Any idea?

    thanks!!

    hello selvage,

    1) 6 gb DDR3 ram is not needed in most of the cases. you need lot of ram if you are working on a huge photoshop file and large resolution or say an intense 3d modelling etc.
1gb vs 4gb makes a big difference but 4gb vs 6gb...(considering the price also hmmm not that important... in fact you might not notice any difference for casual computing.. ) regarding your photoshop usage.. the additional 1gb ati mob radeon 5470 will also support the system to handle the file.

    2) yes you can go for the ssd in the future and its not difficult to do so on this model.

3)go for the warranty (take what ever you can afford) rather than 6gb ram.
its all electronic goods anything can happen. basic warranty will be more than enough( i am guessin that you will care your laptop without any breakage)

4)photoshop and 1080 hd screens are not that related. 720p itself is nice
hmm and for a 15.6 inch laptop 720p is more or what a better choice. 1080p
is ideal for 17 inch lcd

    5) this is nice combination. but dont expect that this will be a work horse for professional level system and definitely not recommended for gaming enthusiasts('coz they need a very good gfx card) apart from that , it should fine for your use.. if you find a better spec with less money , then go for it..

you might get similar lenovo or thoshiba laptops also.
    :)

I just received my new Studio 15 a couple of days ago. I was wondering what is supposed to come in the box? All I got was the laptop, the power cord, and a booklet. My invoice said that I was supposed to get resource CDs but I didn't get any.

A 15 month McAfee subcription was supposed to be included, but the software says it expires in 30 days. If I want to keep using McAfee, do I need to do something?

Also, should I have gotten some sort of DVD playing software like PowerDVD?

    Thanks

just call dell support center...and tell them your situation..they will help you
if you want to speed the process , just say tht you are very unsatisfied and ask the service executive to connect the phone to his manager( actually this is a sales issue rather than a tech issue.... so you should call them)

Darn...Can you recommend one that can fit the 9-cell battery? I would prefer a sleeve-like thing instead of an actual case, but I'll take recommendations for either.

    Thanks :)

Can you describe what freeze mean for you? I have experienced some freezing mainly when I leave the laptop for about 20-30 mins idling and when I come back it I cannot move the mouse and the laptop does not respond at all. But after 30 secs everything starts working. Happens about once or twice a week.

I updagraded from 10.4 to 10.6 recently and it seemed to have lowered the frequency of freeze but it happened yesterday so I know it is still there. I am still using A04 Bios I have not experienced any issues and I did not know of any major fixes with A06.

My temps with normal use (internet surfing) 40-44C CPU and 52-56 GPU.

I just bought a Studio 15 off the outlet this weekend and it will arrive this week. I am concerned about all the issues I am reading with freezes/blue screen etc. Is this a wide spread issue?

I bought a Studio 1558 with the i5 430M processor, dedicated ATI HD4570 video card, 4 gb ram, 320 hard drive and wireless N. I just realized it has a 5400 rpm hard drive so I will have to change that. Hopefully this configuration is one that doesn't have the issues described.

Forums are full of people who have issues. The silent majority rarely express their joy.

The 1558 is an awesome machine especially if you opted for the high res screen. I've had no issues with mine and even the random large cursor issue seems to have vanished.

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with yours when it arrives and there are a whole of people on this forum who will help if you do encounter any issues.

How much did you pay for your spec?

    Hi everybody.

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my dell studio 15 laptop but I have a few questions. I plan on doing a clean install of windows 7 because I want to get rid of the bloat ware and stuff. Is there anything that comes on the computer that I should save before I do this. Also, I have never done this before but should I be able to just follows the steps listed here?

Also any pointers would be helpful.

    Thank you

don't bother. the only real bloatware is mcafee and the dell dock, maybe roxio just for being annoying. there's little to no trialware to be concerned for.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I got my Dell Studio 1558 from the outlet for exactly 709 including tax. It arrived yesterday and while it appears to function great there are some issues:

First, it does not recognize the AC adapter. I tried a Targus universal adapter and the laptop doesn't run from that one either. The laptop is working fine on the battery power it has left (not much) but clearly there is some problem. I called Dell and since this was something right out of the box they are sending a tech to fix it rather than having me send it back to the depot.

2nd..I know this isn't a big thing but there are paint chips in the lid and this model wasn't a scratch and dent. I mean there are chips clear down to the plastic underneath at both corners. They're not huge but they are obvious. The person I spoke to at Dell says they will replace it--I hope so...it looks terrible...

3rd...the 720p screen looks clear but the viewing angles are terrible. I have to bend the screen back beyond 90 degrees to get a clear view. Is this normal?

Functionally the laptop is quite zippy and I did not experience any functional issues in the hour or so that I had it up and running on battery. It's very frustrating, however, to have these issues right out of the box.

I have bought from the Dell outlet many times before and most of the time I have received great items that virtually looked new. But once in a while I have gotten something that makes me wonder if the techs even check the laptops before sending them out.

Hopefully this one will be fine--I think they will need to replace the motherboard as something major is preventing the laptop to recognize AC.

I can't send it back because there will be a restocking fee....dang, why did I have to get a faulty one....

I can understand that! I got a studio 15 which seemed allright but the screen always had some white lines flickering on it which was tough to notice.. they responded promptly n changed my motherboard after which it got really bad n the whole screen had a red tint to it... I got a replacement n everythin has been fine.. maybe u could try getting one too.. its not a nice feeling to know that ur machine had problems right outta the box..

Actually if there is something wrong with the notebook and you called tech support, you can return it without a restocking fee. Just make sure the techs mark notate that there was something wrong. But since you agreed to the tech coming out, I am not sure if you can still return it.

Greetings folks... Popping in to take a look at your posts (haven't yet but will) since I am looking at picking up a 1558.

For mid-range use (typical office/surfing and of course multimedia playback on the go). Gaming is something my AW will handle - this would just be for normal day to day tasks...

Probably would go with the i5 450 or 520, 1080 display, base HDD/RAM/Wireless. EPP only shows the 5470 GPU so I guess I'm stuck with that.

    Thoughts?

    Also,

Any issues with the design I should be aware of?
Is the backlit keyboard decent or does it have issues?

    Thanks all!

Hey, the backlit keyboard and 1080p screen are both great. They are my favorite things about this laptop, really glad I got them both.

Once you get your machine update the BIOS to A06 and update to Catalyst 10.6, if they aren't already done, and you shouldn't have any problems.

If it were me, I'd upgrade to the intel wireless instead of the Dell standard one, good luck with your Studio.

I thought about the Studio 17 too...decided to go with this...I really like it!! It's case seems to be great, hinges/screen very sturdy. Backlit keyboard is nice!! I upgraded to the Intel wireless card, only went with the 720 screen though as I don't watch that many things in HD...didn't get a blue ray as I didn't think it was worth it.

Touchpad can get really hot, but I keep my machine throttled via power options to around 60-70% most of the time to keep some of the heat down. I rarely if ever even notice that it's throttled unless I'm doing something to really beat down my computer. Then again, I'm running a quad core, so a dual core might be different.

Interesting - thanks for that woofer. I figured with the i5 thermals would be a tad bit lower. Ahhh... decisions, decisions.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Now I just need to decide between this or the 17" touch. Thanks again.

I am an Engineer and use a laptop with 1920x1200 display for work (I need to fit as much on my screen as possible). Anyway, my wife does not like how small it makes everything on my screen, her (our personal) laptop is 1280x800 and I feel like after all the toolbars, menus, and etc there is not much space for any real content.

OK, to the point. On the US Dell site, the Studio 1558 only offers 720 (I assume that is 1280x720) or 1080 resolutions. I am certainly not going to buy a new laptop with less resolution that my current one, but if my wife cannot get used to the full HD resolution, how well does the display scale to non-native resolutions? Are they distorted or horribly fuzzy? I have seen displays that do a real good job, and some that are terrible.

No computer is perfect and it is very subjective, but is there any consensus on what the latest Studio 1558 biggest issues are (heat, noise, screen brightness, viewing angle, etc)?

    720p has a res of 1366 x 768.... and i think its ideal for a 15 inch laptop ...
1080p is usually preferred for 17 inch screens or higher..
i think there are possible good resolutions available like you can set 720p resolution in full hd screen.. but i dont think tht will be as good as a real 720p screen.. (anybody have tested it??... i have only read abt it..)

yes .you are wright.. no comp is perfect.. depends on user and his usage style... heat issues are usally for quadcore systems only.. i5 and i3 is cool..
as far as i am considered the screen is great indoor,, but very reflective outdoor..

just roll back your driver (no need to update anything if they work) from device manager.

NIC means network interface card. And i'm pretty sure you can find your hardware models from your invoice or order review.

Hi. I have a studio 1558 with these specs:

    Processor: Intel i5-540M(2.53GHz) Mobile CPU
Display : 15.6 Widescreen Full High Definition (1920X1080) WLED with TrueLife
    Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Graphics : 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

I understand it is not a hardcore gaming laptop but thought it wouldnt struggle more than my old pc..

This person says they can play Mass Effect 2 on full settings ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/6301516-post3.html) but mine is struggling on 1280x720.

They also say they can play GRID fine ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/6298224-post1.html) but for me it's unplayable on anything but the lowest settings.

Is this just my laptop that is having problems? Have I tweaked some settings wrong? I clean installed Windows 7 Home off my own disc when the laptop arrived but I'm 99% I updated all the drivers.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for any help!

Well I'd say qmrneo is a liar or very unneedy when it comes to playing :p "FINE" in my gaming vocabulary means FPS greater than 60 and I have better processor than he has and haven't found any new game that runs fine with all settings maxed (1920x1080 screen).

This isn't a gaming rig at all so you can sleep in peace that your 1558 can't run games at nice speeds because it isn't meant to :)

Haha okay thank you! Wish I had researched the graphics card a bit more before purchase... do you know of any tweaks that might push my system to its limit without burning it to a crisp?

I wish there was an easy way to make sure turbo boost was working whilst playing games because I'm always a bit paranoid it isnt.

You can run CPU-Z and alt-tab when middle of gaming to see if proc. is boosted or not.

I'm playing fairly old games with it like CS and HLDM, one new is Settlers 7 (it's not running fine :p but I can tolerate it) and I haven't noticed any "burning to crisp" events with my lappy.

Just be sure to hold it on hard surface (table) so the air vents can suck up all the air they need to cool the lappy and you should be fine.

well turbo boost is not answer for that... turbo boost is designed on the basis of what type software or game and how it can utilize the multi core support..
in general higher clocks means better performance.. but what turbo boost does is (eg: i5 based system running a multi core software uses both core at lower stable clock speed... and changes its clock speed OF ONLY ONE CORE to the higher value to work fast on single threaded applications..
note: most of the upcoming games use multi threading/ multi processor support.

one more point on race driver grid.... you can relax .. thts a bug on the game which wont detect the processor counts i5/i7 based system which ultimately results in ... freezing of the game. bad fps. not loading etc...
in fact race driver grid had released a patch for this problem... tht you can download from the official website itself

there is no point in monitoring the turbo boost and clock speed .. anyway you cant control it... just use your laptop the normal way....

    :)
