I have a Dell Studio 14Z with shatered monitor. The laptop still turns on but I can't see anything on the screen.

I was planning to buy a docking station so I can use an external monitor. Studio 14Z does not have the slot type port that is usually found on larger laptops, so the docking station will probably be USB (is there one with SATA?).

My biggest question is ... can I plug in my laptop to the docking station and turn power on from the docking station and it will automatically appear on external monitor? or do I need change some settings on my laptop which I can't since I can't see anything :(

Sorry about your lappy's screen :( You don't happen to have Complete Care warranty do you, by chance?

I thought only Dell's Business Line of Notebooks was able to use Docking Stations.

You don't need the use of a docking station. You can use a keyboard/mouse and a external monitor. :)

By the way, as the 14z quite a new notebook, it could make sense to buy a screen on ebay and install it yourself.

I would suggest what Cin' said and to hook it up to an external monitor. If I remember correctly the Studio 14z does not have a VGA or DVI connect and only an HDMI and Displayport. So you can hook it up to them or buy HDMI to DVI or so on.

I do not have complete care and I did drop it :(

If I attach an external monitor (using HDMI or other available port), and turn on my laptop, don't I need to first switch to external output from my laptop so that the video will appear on external monitor.

I don't know if I can just attach external monitor and the video will automatically appear on external monitor?

The video might automatically appear on external monitor. Even if it doesn't, you can use fn+Fx key to let it appear on the monitor. I don't know which button it is for your laptop, but it should have a Monitor/Laptop switch button.
