I'm wondering if anyone has had any issues getting the order completed and etc.

I put in an order on July 7, 2008. July 10th it is show being "In Production" with an estimated Receipt date of July 28th. No updates to the "Notebook status" page since then. I talk with a representative on July 23, 2008 and she tells me that it's due to be shipped July 25. I'm told to call back Monday to check and see if it was shipped. Sweet right ? Atleast that's what I'm thinking. So i contact dell today and this other representative tells me.. "I can tell you that your order has not begun production yet. 21 days after the order, the notebook HAS NOT even started to be put together. Now i'm told it'll be another minimum of 2 weeks. Which would bring the total wait time to 5-6 weeks. I'm guessing that it'll be another 2-4 weeks. So perfect.

I'm really starting to hate my decision into ordering a laptop from Dell from their online store. But considering that i have the installment plan it's too late for me to cancel my order. I honestly don't know how i feel about dell anymore.

Point to the post ? beware of major delays when ordering via Dell's online shop. Has anyone encountered any similar delays with Dell recently ?

(ps. It's a Dell Studio 15 with a few upgraded pars.. cpu / monitor / ram / video card.)

I ordered my customized Studio (cpu, monitor, ram, etc.) on the 11th and received it on the 22nd. I'm sure there is a way for them to speed up the process if you push them, tell them you will cancel your order maybe?

Dell really cares less if people want to cancel their order. They really do nothing to stop them. But really, I understand where you are coming from. I would be pissed off if mine wasn't in production after 3 full weeks.

WOW......I ordered a Studio 17 on the this Saturday the 26th, that night it was already in the build stage, yesterday morning it was in testing and by last night it was already in boxing. I'm guessing it will be here by the end of the week since I have next day air.

You should just order another one and if it ships first, then cancel the first one. They don't charge your card until it ships.

That's just unlucky. I ordered mine on the 22nd and got a phone call earlier saying it's being delivered tomorrow (29th) which means 1 week for it to be built (had loads of upgrades) and shipped. The only differences are that I ordered over the phone, and I live in the UK. Guess that's the upside to being shafted on price.

Hope you get yours soon though, I've found waiting to be really annoying even after this period of time. Could you not complain and see if they throw in some free stuff for you?

That's weird. I placed my custom Studio 15 last night (at 2 O'clock in the morning). Today my order status is "in production".

I also checked my bank account and the amount charged by Dell is pending, which I think it will be cleared by my bank tomorrow morning (Tuesday) - next business day. We will see how fast I will get my Studio 15. ETA shipping is August 11th.

It's probably some specific component that's holding the system up. Dell tries to warn you in the configuration page if an option will delay the order, but sometimes there are delays on stuff they don't know about.

You might be able to find out if a specific component is holding it up and change it...at least it seems like I've read about people doing that.

I called and talked to like 3 different people and they could not find why it was delayed.

The last one said "it's in high demand" and thats about it, but I placed this order like 2 weeks ago.

Also I couldn't even understand some of the things they were saying.

I hope the wait will be worth it...

I ordered mine on July 29th and the estimated ship date is August 8th. I guess I should expect that to be changed soon since I ordered the back-lit keyboard. :( Wow 12 day delay! I don't think my poor heart can handle the extra wait time.

I ordered mine 7-17-08 and received an email yesterday (8-1-08 estimated ship date) that it is delayed and the new ship date is 8-8-08. Hope I don't get another email on the 8th saying it is delayed again.

I ordered my Studio 15 on the 25th and it arrived on the 1st August, and it had a backlit keyboard.

I do believe Dell are shipping these out as fast as they can, but I think the more you deviate from a standard build (i.e. one that is offered to you as/is on the site), the longer you might have to wait.

My laptop only added 802.11n, backlit keyboard, BT and Ruby Red cover to the cheapest config on Dell UK, and it was shipped from Ireland.

I ordered mine the 26th and its supposed to ship the 5th and arrive the 7th. I am getting a bit worried that it is still in production and the boxing stage takes 2-3 days. I will be so sad if I get delayed.

I ordered mine the 21st and now it says its supposed to ship on the 7th and arrive on the 11th. I checked yesterday and it was still in the "build" stage so I'm pretty confident its gonna get delayed again.

Ok, so I ordered the exact same Studio as you, on the exact same day apparently. Same estimated ship date and everything. I have received no e-mails though from Dell. Is yours still listed as "in production"?

Yah, I also ordered mine in canada on the 17th of July, and had an online listed ESD of August 4th. I haven't gotten any e-mails, but when i called Dell last week, they didn't mention any delays and actually said my ESD was supposed to be the 1st of August. However, my online order status still says "In Production" and whenever I called dell, no one could tell me what exact stage it was in (i.e. Testing or Kitting).

To make matters worse, today is a holiday in Canada, so the dell offices are closed apparently. So looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out if my studio 15 is delayed. Does anyone know any specific component that could be causing the delay?

    EDIT: -UPDATE
Just got off the phone with the Dell CS rep, he said that there's a specific part that's delaying my laptop from being built, he told me to call another number to find out what part it is. After calling the second rep, he told me its the battery (I got the 6-cell). He told me it would be at least 4-5 business days to get past the delay. I guess this development isn't unexpected since they did have that fire that messed up the batteries in the warehouse, if I remember what i read correctly on this forum.

    And so the waiting continues.

I just got off the phone with them (i am also in Canada, i guess their call center in India that covers the Canadian calls doesn't get our holiday :p ). My estimated ship date was August first and they corrected it for me when I called, it is now August 7th.

I called Dell today (8-5) and was told that the batteries are the hold up. Not sure I believe that answer. I read on the forum here where the company that makes the 9 cell batteries had a fire and they are having problems getting those, but I ordered the plain 6 cell model, so the battery should not be a problem in my case. Someone else in this forum said there was a problem getting the back-lit kbds. I did order the model with that. They told me mine is in Production and should ship on 8-8-08 as the revised schedule indicates. That's 3 more days, I will wait and see.

I went to Staples and they do have the Studio 15's in stock for $749, but it is the base model w/o the ATI graphics card and the plain B/G wireless card. So I guess I will keep my fingers crossed and hope it ships this Friday.

NOTE: I asked Dell about any type of compensation for the delay (extended warranty, more ram, etc.) They said they have no policies in place for compensation.

Note 2: did you go to the website and select to be notified by email when it ships? If not, that is probably why you have nto received any emails.

    Interesting!!!
I just went back to the initial webpage where you pick the base unit to build from and they have made some changes. I chose the 'Better' (middle of the road unit $899) to build from.

Oddly enough the base unit for $899 has now changed.

    When I ordered 7-17-08
    250 Gb HD
    Backlit Keyboard
    Fingerprint Reader

    Now 8-6-08
    320 Gb Hd
Standard Kbd (Backlit is $25 more)
No Fingerprint Reader - $25 more

I wonder why the changes. I am glad I ordered when I got the back-lit kbd and FP scanner. I hope mine comes the way it was ordered. Altho the 320 Gb drive would be nice, I need the back-lit kbd and FP scanner more at the moment. I can always drop a bigger drive in later.

If you ordered after 7-17-08,you might want to dbl checkyour order and make sure you are getting what you thought!

It'll be whatever you ordered. Dell plays around with prices and configurations a lot (I'm assuming it's based on availability or costs or something).

Ordered a Studio 15 on July 18th. The only thing I changed from their default configuration for the model that I picked was to change the color from blue to Jet Black. I can't get any further information on my delay, and I just got a 'unexpected delay' message on the first two estimated ship dates. The CS reps that I've talked to have all been entirely incompetent and useless. I hate to be harsh, since I work in customer and tech support, but they have given me no help at all.

I really would cancel at this point, but I'm paying with a Dell Preferred account, which can't be used at another company, and I don't want to start the whole delay process again. I just hope it arrives before the 27th, when I'm flying out on a business trip.

Not to harp on it, but I really wonder if Dell has any consistent policies in place. Someone in sales at least told you that he'd get your order expedited. There's no way of telling if he actually did anything, but you're getting your laptop in a reasonable time frame, at least comparatively. Other people are being told that there's no way to expedite orders, or even to change the shipping method of an order being processed. Good luck finding anything that states policy.

Oh well. I'm happy for you to be getting one in the next few days, at least, and that offers hope to the rest of us that they might actually ship these things once in a while.

Well after Dell changed my ship date for the 2nd time to the 14th, I called and offered to change whatever might be holding it up, if it was the display, I'd get a better one, if it was the wireless N card, I'll get one later. I was told that any changes (including paying for overnight shipping) would mean they would have to cancel the order and resubmit it with the changes.

I told them to let it stand as is. That was Saturday. Sunday night 8/10, I checked the order status and it had shipped!!! Wasn't supposed to till 8/14. My delivery date is 8/13.

Don't know if my calling 2 times had anything to do with it, but glad it is on it's way. Original order date 7/17/08.

Note: I have heard from several people and it happened to me. If you complain while talking to them, they offer to transfer you to someone that can make changes or do whatever you are asking for. What happens then is your are transferred to India and the person keeps saying. I am so sorry about your problem, but there is nothing we can do. MORAL here: be nice to whomever you get on the phone.
