Hi i baught a Dell studio 17 of ebay for £280 on bidding which is very cheap as they normally cost at least £400 for refurbished models and £500 for new. I think the owner who sells alot of laptops has replaced the screen and casing although he said it was not refurbished  . He knows what he is doing and the laptop itself looks like new. Ive used it about 8 seperate times for at least 1 hour and the other day when running on battery the screen started flickering and would not stop. I went on again later for 3 hours using the plug and it was fine. Its also been fine the last few days running off battery. The battery symbol that lights up on the touch panel keeps flickering on and off. Will this laptop be ok or is there something that could get worse? as i dont want to ask for a refund incase there is nothing wrong because i got it so cheap. I got it as a second laptop for my dell inspiron 15.

please help so i can know if its a bad fault or nothing major.
    thanks

Define "flickering". Was the backlight rapidly cutting in and out?

Also, there is no "battery symbol" on the media panel. If you're talking about the cylinder-shaped icon to the far right, that's the hard drive activity light, and it will always be flickering under normal use, so that's perfectly natural.

If the "flickering" only happens while it's on battery and not while it's plugged in to AC power, then it's probably not a problem with display or backlight.

Yes the screen is rapidly cutting in and out in terms of going bright and dull. Its like a strobe light when u switch it on and it flickers for a few seconds then fully lights up. I can still look at the screen properly but its really annoying. I read on the internet that it could be a loose connection and some people said it happens to there laptop when on battery. Could there be a fault with the screen?? or any reason to try and get a refund?

It sounds like the monitor cables are not seated properly/came loose on the motherboard or the lamp inside the display is going bad.

you might have to take it apart or take it to a shop for this one, kind of tough to diagnose

I would say it sounds like something's not connected properly, but if that were the case, it should still flicker while plugged in.

Call Dell, that should definitely be covered under warranty.
