I bought a Dell E1705 off ebay which is still under warranty and came to me in the factory box which i still have.

Is there ANY way i could have dell take it back (even though i did not buy it right from them) or have dell do an exchange for a different model?

You got the receipt/invoice? Is the service tag even switched over to your name?

    Doubt it like hell.

My friend bought an Inspiron 6400 from Ebay, which happened to be a 'Dell Cancelled Order'. While it was in the warranty period, he did get proper support from Dell and also got some parts replacement. As long as the Service tag is in your name, you get Dell support and It doesn't matter from whom you bought it.
However I don't see the chances of laptop being replaced...

Not gonna happen, you're stuck with it unless you sell it privately.

LOL just sell it on eBay and buy a new one. XPS M1330 is much easier to carry around school ;)

I don't know how big you are, but I'm an average size guy (5'10") and when I had the e1705 and I carried it around campus all day, it literally killed my back.

I sold my e1705 a month ago and now I'm waiting for my 14.1". :)

As for Dell taking it back, fat chance. As someone else suggested, try selling it on ebay and then just purchase yourself something smaller.

I sold my e1705 to my brother. I too initially got it for gaming but when I needed it in school, it became a pain. While it's not a lot to carry by itself, throw some books in there with it and it is a back killer. I came so close to getting one of those backpacks that look like luggage carriers.

    I'm replacing it with a 15" that's at least 4 lbs lighter.
