I heard that the Vostro has a 30-day (not 21-day) return policy, with no restocking fee or no return shipping charge. However, the Return Policy stated here on Dell's website does not withstand.
Can anyone link me to where this is explicitly stated?
PS: I've never dealt with Dell before

It has never changed and accompanies every computer...
"Total Satisfaction" Return Policy (U.S. and Canada Only)
If you are an end-user customer who bought new products directly from a Dell company, you may return them to Dell within 30 days of the date of invoice for a refund or credit of the product purchase price. If you are an end-user customer who bought reconditioned or refurbished products from a Dell company, you may return them to Dell within 14 days of the date of invoice for a refund or credit of the product purchase price. In either case, the refund or credit will not include any shipping and handling charges shown on your invoice. If you are an organization that bought the products under a written agreement with Dell, the agreement may contain different terms for the return of products than specified by this policy.
To return products, you must call Dell Customer Service to receive a Credit Return Authorization Number. Refer to "Getting Help" in your Installation and Troubleshooting Guide to find the appropriate telephone number for obtaining customer assistance. To expedite the processing of your refund or credit, Dell expects you to return the products to Dell in their original packaging within five days of the date that Dell issues the Credit Return Authorization Number. You must also prepay shipping charges and insure the shipment or accept the risk of loss or damage during shipment. You may return software for refund or credit only if the sealed package containing the diskette(s) or CD(s) is unopened. Returned products must be in as-new condition, and all of the manuals, diskette(s), CD(s), power cables, and other items included with a product must be returned with it. For customers who want to return, for refund or credit only, either applications software or an operating system that has been installed by Dell, the whole system must be returned, along with any media and documentation that may have been included in the original shipment.
This "Total Satisfaction" Return Policy does not apply to DellWare products, which may be returned under DellWare's then-current return policy. In addition, reconditioned parts purchased through Dell Spare Parts Sales in Canada are non-returnable.
EDIT: I have returned a system under this policy. You dont pay shipping; they send you labels by email; simply print them off. They even arrange for the service to pick the system up at your door.
You dont lose a penny ever. -
it says "return them to Dell within 30 days of the date of invoice ". Does that mean 30 days from when I ordered it online or 30 days from when I received the laptop?
oh, and on a sidenote, if I order a dell right now and its price drops in next few days, do I get the new discount? Do I get it even if its being currently shipped? -
Your date of invoice is the date it is shipped from Dell to you.

Well, I called Dell just now. That was an experience in and of itself.
By the time I got to Todd who could help me (after 2-3 other folks) he stated that "No, Maam. They do not have that policy" when asked if they still have their Total Customer Satisfaction Policy which allows returns within 30 days. I specifically inquired for home and for business. He said they had a 21-day return policy. -

This is a link to the return policy in Canada. It is a 30 day period, but there is a 15% restocking fee by default:
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/policy?c=ca&l=en&s=gen&~section=018
See also item 8 at:
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/reftopic.aspx/gen/en/policy?c=ca&cs=&l=en&s=gen&~section=012
However, I believe there are exceptions where the 15% restocking fee does not apply. For example, in Canada, my understanding is that there is no restocking fee for Vostro's. At least, that is how I read "30 day money-back guarantee"
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=ca&cs=cabsdt1&l=en&s=bsd
Also. I think the restocking fee does not apply to most business laptops in Canada. See "Compare Notebooks" on this page:

The restocking fee and shipping expense can be held by Dell and they only do it in exceptional circumstances. I deal regularly with an Exec who explained this to me a few months back. He gave an example of a system not being accepted once shipped; this is when that clause is used.
I also know of one other who stated flat out they changed their mind.
I myself returned a 6400 about 2 years ago under the Total Satisfaction Program solely because I didn't like the feel. I was honest, they emailed me my mailing sticker and it was picked up. There was no restocking fee. -
I called this evening before I placed an order and inquired whether they still had the 30-day satisfaction policy for home or business. I was told no, they don't. I hope Todd (at Dell) wasn't right. I don't have any plans to return my new order but I do want the option if I don't like it.

Most dont know anything about the Total Satisfaction Program. This is because they have a department that deals with this only who will take care of all that. Look it up at the Dell site.

I live in Canada and returned my M1530 via UPS and it was all paid. They email you the waybill to put on the box. Now I will have to start the process all over again...LOL I had some damage on the hinge but other than that the machine was a rocket!!!! So off to order again...bonus another colour and 1 other screen resolution. Cheers!
