Hey Guys!!!
I have an inspiron 8500 right now and its still running like its brand new(except for the LCD dimming)but everything else is nice. Do you guys know whats the life expectancy is for dell laptops??? Me only have it for about 1 1/2 years so hope it last along time cause its expensive(i only make $100 a week and im only 19). Ive bought This Inspiron 9200 for no reason(coo!!!coo!!!) but if you ever call dell for service(wow) it took me about an hour waiting to speak to someone and i called in the afternoon But back to topic, Does dell laptops last long??? Did any of you guys have big problems after the one year warranty ends??? But I hope my 8500 and my upcoming 9200 would last long cause its a dell. Everyone says that dell computers are reliable. ALso My inspiron 8500 Gets TOO Hoot!!! will that shorten its life??? i know at least that hot is bad for motherboards and things inside it(me???)

I have had a Dell 8200 for a little over two years and have had no problems with it short of the limitations in RAM and graphics card. I have never once had to call tech support and never buy any service plans.
IMO, computers for ordinary consumers have a shelf life of 2-3 years. After that, they tend to be behind the times technology wise.
For the use the average person gets out of a computer, $1500 every 2-3 years is pretty reasonable. -
What often breaks most of the time in laptops and since i have the 60gb 7200RPM, wont that wear faster cause it spins more faster than regular 4000-5000RPM drives.

My personal opinion is that Dell's reliabilty has gotten a little bit worse recently. I actually think their older laptops were built with better quality.
However, I have not had any problems with my 8600, which I've had for about a year now. I did own a 5150 for a few months and it was pure junk.
Because a laptop compresses equipment into a tiny spot, it can generate more heat. As long as your fans are running properly, heat shouldn't be too much of an issue. But just like any mechanical part, things tend to break down over time.

Woaaa!!! I guess Dell has not been as good as what people were saying about it before. Ive always been told how reliable it was but i guess not. By the way, does anybody know what should be the normal temperature of laptops and whats the mid and whats the worst your pc should be running and would running the fan on alot could help lower the normal temperature and speed it up alitle bit??? Me just wondering???

To Skip the whole story, skip the following paragraph:
Also the only reason im buying another dell was because ive kinda flooded my inspiron 8500 with water while its running hot and i ddnt know what to do so i left it on for about 5 minutes until it went into my mind, hmmmmm.. water conducts electricity and water is bad for electronics and finally using my quick reflexes(none at all, maybe its because i was watching American Idol that time and my mind shuts off wondering what are they doing there) then i turned it off. For some reason (???) after it was off, i tried to turn it back on after juggling the laptop to get some water out but only about 50% came out and it wont turn back on again... so i got to thinking??? should i have turned of the computer 5 minutes earlier so it could have not have short circuit the cpu??? and for some reason, i thought, "this is bad..." So ive decided to open up the laptop even though i dnt know how to open it up. I just know i need to get all the water out of there. Maybe it was that times when i was a little young when i opened electronics to c whats inside but can never put them back together; me dnt know why??? but i manage to open it up and wow!!! there was a pool of water everywhere so i took out a video camera to record everything(just a little reminder cause if i cant put it back together then i just dnt know how to hurt my self preety badly) but i took out everthing and lay them sideways and used a car fan blower(Very Strong) and Blasted all the water out(at least i hope) then few hours later, i assembled it back and hope my pants off this would work!!! and the time came to push that power botton. I pushed... then YESSSSSSSSS!!! it was like my luckiest event in my life!!! its been 6months and still going strong!!! SO This conviced me to stick to dell computers.
In Short, since this water incident happened and thougth i was gonna replace something(I did replace the keyboard because some keys got sticky) or die soon but for now, I stick with dell -
Yeah I think immersing your laptop in water is a bad thing no matter what brand you buy!
