I will begin the situation with what my computer is made of.
Dell Inspiron 1520
2g ram
NVidia Geforce 8600m GT
Tochiba MK1637GSX HD - 160GB
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.00 ghz
Quite the common laptop that seems to be running around these forums. I have gone up and down the 1520 threads to try and figure a way to resolve my current issue. But I believe it is a new one.
To begin, when I received this computer, I replaced the Vista, with XP. Unfortunately did not back it up. None the less its done with and I am on XP for a reason of being more comfortable.
Aside from getting drivers for everything I have seem to run into a problem with my gaming performance. I only state performance with games, as I can immediately tell if its bad or good due to showing my FPS. The problem I can't seem to get rid of is how my computer will fluctuate between performing good and bad. To state this, I can start up a game and it will be running at 12-25fps. Another day it will be running 120fps(We are talking Team Fortress 2) I honest to god cannot figure it out and would appreciate to the utmost of anything if anyone knew what I should do.
I was looking at the ATA/AHCI issue with which one could be better, seeing as i switched to ATA due to the XP installation. None the less I don't think the problem lies there.
*Edit*
Just to throw it out there, could I have a memory leak some where throwing my computer off scale once in a while? If so what would be a step to fixing this, and how to officially know if its true?

You have your power settings set to Maximum Performance, right?
And you're running your games while the adapter is plugged in? -
Yes and yes.
-
Are you sure there are no spyware or virus scans running in the backgroud automatically?
-
Yes I am sure there is no scanning programs laying around, as reformatting from Vista to XP, I installed none.
I know there are no virus's and such as I have not done nothing to gain that. And I know exactly what websites I have been viewing, files been downloaded/installed etc. Taken care of this comp like gold. -
Which drivers are you using?
Are they from Dell or laptopvideo2go.com ?
Have you tried monitoring the GPU temperatures to see if they're getting too high? -
As far as temps go, I am running a Dell program that tells me the temp, and forces fan speed for a constant low temp. Plus have a cooling fan underneath. The video drivers are from Laptopvideo2go.com.

This post says there are problems with the 17x.xx drivers on laptops because they're made for SLI.

If you're using a 17x.xx series driver, try one of the 16x.xx drivers. -
Sigh* I just don't know what to do. I am using a 16x.xx driver.

Well I did a virus scan/adware scan. No virus's, couple adware. Removed and still performs as it was. Sorry to keep bumping this thread, but this is preventing me from gaming and seek any knowledge anyone has.
