Here are results from June 2008's diagnostic utility. Notice how there are new numbers compared to the 2007 one. Something is definitely cooking up at Dell. It's not totally new news, or an actual leak, but its something interesting nonetheless.

This is technically old news... but interesting nonetheless. First discovered back in 2007. Of course, this is technically old news, figured it might be interesting to some who are craving for info, but nothing has come out of it yet. Hopefully this helps it a bit.

Below is from June 2008 (Thanks Jako for the discovery!)

Release dates are still non-existant, though rumor on German forums say:

XPS M1340 - 08/24 [Highly Unlikely because 8/24 is a SUNDAY, Dell doesn't release new models on Sundays] (Thanks atbnet for pointing that out)
    XPS M1640 - 09/23

    http://www.xps-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=7514
(Credit to dampfnudel for German rumor of release dates)

Though most likely it is just someone randomly saying that since one of the dates as atbnet pointed out doesn't make much sense.

Does that mean they're planning to get rid of the 15.4" XPS?

EDIT: It might make sense though, 16x9 screens FTW! ;)

Maybe Dell thinks if someone really wants a 15.4", they can buy a Studio 15. We'll find out in the next couple of months.

I had seen this while trawling Google for M1640 information. Seems logical though. The 8/24 date is a bit weird because it's a Sunday.

Yeah, its literally just a rumor, nothing more. The systems themselves are likely, though really, its been quite a while... anything is susceptible to change.

With the secret 16 inch model Dell was showing off in January at a trade show, I definitely think the next one will be 16 inch.

That Sunday release date looked weird to me too. Then again, maybe it just means that it will be released that week which I might add is a little late for the back-to-school sales.

Since the Dell Diagnostics info comes from December 2007, it's quite likely that any dates they had planned then have changed. I pointed this out in the other thread, but the post on the xps.de forum came BEFORE Intel announced the Montevina delay (May 17 post, May 28 announcement). So, unless Dell knew about the delay well before Intel made it public, it's possible that those dates did not account for the delay, which may or may not mean that the new laptops are further away.

Also notice how in Forte's post, the M1530 is mentioned twice - once with the M1340 and M1640, and then with the M1330 and M1730. Maybe they were planning on adding Montevina to the M1530 without changing the chassis? Just a guess. :p

EDIT: The xps.de forum thread was posted by spajix a few days ago in the now gigantic "Spill the beans.." started by Forte. Just thought I'd point that out!

Regardless- the release dates are very late for back-to-college students. Even HP barely squeezed it in. Most students I know are leaving next week/ or for sure the week after. So no new Dell laptops to any one going to the tons of different colleges my friends are going to. Stupid move on Dell's part as they most likely will not get much revenue off any college students.

Maybe they had no choice due to several factors, one being Intel's delay. Plus I'm sure they knew about nVidia's defective video cards long ago... It's still pretty difficult to get new Montevina laptops. I'm still waiting for reviews of the new HP Elitebook, new Lenovo T and W series, and Dell's Latitude E and XPS.

XPS 630 gaming notebook? WTF? I'm less inclined to trust an article that does not present the facts correctly, even though we all know something's happening on August 12.

im waiting till tuesday, if they don't announce anything good, on wednesday, im ordering either the studio 15, xps m1530, or the asus 50vm-x1

I was looking at the A1 on Xotic PC and I was surprised it has two hard drives. I could swap out one with an SSD and have a nice little setup. It would be cool if they offered RAID though.

This is kind of the same way they let the Studio line slip up. They had power adapters that were compatible with the 1535 weeks before they were released. The caught the mistake and editted it though.

You do have the option of selecting RAID 0 or RAID 1 from the BIOS settings (I think). You should check this thread:

Indeed, it does. That's why I wanted to go with the M1730 at one point because of RAID ability. I am glad it can now be done in a 15 inch notebook. This model will definitely be considered. Thanks for the link.

Interesting. The 1535 was supposed to be the AMD based Studio. Should we assume a 1537 would be the Montevina Studio? It's good to see that the M1340 and M1640 are still in the file. This gives more credibilty that they exist.

Actually, the 1536 was supposed to be the AMD-based Studio, but yeah, the 1537 could be the Montevina-based one. This will allow Dell to continue using the "15" name. Maybe they'll just mention during the press conference that the Studio line will now come with newer chips.

Interestingly, the 1340 and 1640 do not have the M prefix in this diagnostic release. Perhaps Dell is renaming the XPSes along the same lines as the Studio (XPS 13, XPS 16)? Also, what the hell is the Studio XPS 435?

You're right, it was the 1536. I wasn't paying attention to what I was typing. I wonder why they never released them though. With the Puma platform they would have made great laptops. Especially since they do use ATI graphics.

They dropped the 1720, so they may just push the Studio 17 instead.

Could be, but the Studio 17 and Inspiron 1720 were at the same price. It's not really Dell's best business strategy to have to models competing internally.

I hope the new XPS has 9700 series or even better 9800 series gpu, or I will be really disappointed.

I'm hoping for a lightweight 1640, myself. Very curious to know the dimensions and weight of this thing.

What is the weight on the FW? I totally forgot to pick it up when I looked at it yesterday.
