When will Dell start shipping computers with the Penryn Processors?

I've been wondering the same too, and I think they're waiting until they clear their stock of 65nm processors first.

If anyone from the future arrives to answer these questions, also let us know when Dell will release an LED option for the M1530. Thanks! :)

    That's ridiculously far away.

The processors are in stock in many pc hardware stores so I suppose if they did a quick bios update to support them across the range then that would be a start.

    I need a T9500 :D

Are you sure? I think the T9300 is the way to go. It's about 40% cheaper and is only 0.1GHz slower and as far as I can tell that's about the only difference (2.5GHz vs 2.6GHz), or am I missing something?

Probably as soon as the promotions end. Could be as early as next week, no later than the first week of February with HP/Apple etc already announcing Penryn notebooks.

I need the computer by early march, if the penryns arnt available by then it would have been a waste.

Where have you heard that? The MBP was anticipated to get refreshed with Penryn for Mac World but that didn't happen. It's all speculation right now although everyone agrees that the next thing to come out from Apple is the new MBP, but nothing official yet.

You should be excited about the T9500. I had a promotion sample to test and it wasnt vastly more powerful than, lets say a T7800. Though battery life will benefit somewhat, the laptop they sent the T9500 in wasnt the best notebook in the battery life department either - it didnt show any improvement actually (ASUS S96S - was, is and still is ~2h of light usage). I'm probably getting the T7300 in my D630 replaced for a T8300 or T9300.

Apple too. My reply earlier was in reference to apple, not HP. Apple's been pretty mum about the MBP refresh which is sure to have Penryn and everyone anticipated the announcement to come at Macworld. Now it's being pushed back for some reason, and no one knows till when.

Rumors swirling around that Penryn has some issues that have delayed it. Whether these are technical issues or availability/supply issues no one knows. My guess is the latter.

Could someone please clue we into why all of you people are waiting for the new CPU? What are you doing that requires a processor with 10% more power (if that) than you already have? To tinker? To brag? I'm using as intensive apps as anyone, and 30 seconds less on rendering 3D Studio Max isn't worth the cost here. Everything else I have doesn't need it. If anything, we need a better graphics card (#%@&ing Crytek!), a CPU is good for years.

I don't feel that penryn is that big of a deal but since it's out I'm also going to wait for it.

I just want a Laptop. :swoon:

Personally, I did not wait and purchased recently. Will I regret it? I don't think so. But the promise of a slight performance increase coupled with reduction in power consumption and the additional battery life that comes with it, along with reduced heat dissipation, all at the same cost (for the actual processor, not the whole new notebook) is ultimately why people have been waiting for them.

The reason I didn't wait is because those improvements appear to be marginal at best in real world testing and the notebook deals going on right now will erode for a while when these CPUs come out.

Besides, you never know whether there will be some glitches, teething problems if you will, with the new processors that may very well cause all those who waited to regret the whole wait thing.

OK, maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better about not waiting. :)

I didnt wait 2 years ago when I bought my Dell 6000 and got a great deal in the Jan sales. I was a bit gutted when all of the new machines hit the market a few weeks later - this time I will wait and see if I'm gutted when it costs me more....

Engadget has reported on rumours that mobile Penryns T9500, T9300, T8300 and T8100 are being delayed due to a thermal sensor issue, resulting in tight supply through February that will affect all notebooks.

Actually people think that the performance difference is only 10% or less because that is the difference between equally clocked processors ie. 2.6Ghz T7800 and the new 2.6Ghz T9500. However when it comes to the difference between the 2.2Ghz T7500, which is probably the most common current processor at least on this board, and the T9300 2.5Ghz, the cheapest penryn with 6MB cache, the difference is more like 20% performance boost as these wPrime comparisons show. (The T9300 is faster than the T7800 2.6Ghz)

Also Penryn features 10% longer battery life which may also come in handy for some.

It may be true, but 20% perfomance boost also comes with higher price tag too, so it is not justify for me. I would buy the computer based on architecture changed instead of mior refresh, if you see what I mean. The sale is great right now, and if you need laptop now. This is the best time to buy it rather than wait. My T7700 will be more than enough to power my applications and my needs.

No soldering, just remove the heatsink assembly, unlock cpu, remove cpu, insert new one, lock it and replace the heatsink assembly.

You would need to know if your m1330 bios can support the new cpu and if it is within working limits of the m1330's cooling and power hardware. :)

cooling would pose no problem since it's suppose to be cooler than the T7-series. It just takes a quick question with dell tech-support to find out.

If someone does, do post here and tell us =)

Only reason I'm waiting is that I'm tired of returning M1330's to Dell because of the CPU whine... on battery the whine is annoying.. I know some machines don't have it but I keep getting unlucky.. I'm hoping even if I get the lowest end Penryn that the whine's been fixed... only reason I'm waiting.. not for a 10% boost... the battery life increase is just a bonus....

Well, lenovo is now offering the R61 with Penryn. Shouldn't be too long for Dell. I suspect it'll be next month after the current crop of coupons expire.

I've just done that. Paid £670 for the top-end m1330. Waiting to see what the Penryn prices will be like in Rip Off Britland, to see if I can sacrifice the 250GB HDD for a Penryn (hell yes) but more if its worth it...

Cant argue with that price - even in rip off Britain - you got a good deal there either way. Looks like the US site has extended their promotions until Monday the 4th of Feb - I'm guessing the UK ones will be extended as well.

That price was after free delivery, a 10% voucher, and 5% quidco cashback. The actual laptop was £850 without those, and normally £1099 without January's sale savings.

So I'm guessing the Penryns will push up the price to at least £1200.
