I am considering getting a Latitude e6400 from the dell outlet, but was wondering whether any of you remember/know whether refurbished systems normally qualify for microsoft's free operating system upgrade? Here it would be for a free upgrade from vista business to Windows 7 professional (manufacturers including dell supposed to announce these programs on friday)

If the system doesn't qualify, I'll go ahead and order a refurbished system from Dell Outlet before Friday, or buy a new system on Friday.

I called Dell SB today about this as I'm planning on purchasing an E6400/E6500 in the next few days and they told me they weren't sure because they only handle the new side of things

They gave me the extension for the Outlet OS people but they closed before I even made the call to SB so I'll try to reach them tomorrow and see what kind of answer I get.

I called them today and they said that multiple people had called today about windows 7 update and dell out.

they said they won't have any additional information for two weeks, and that the outlet reps have no idea whether dell has decided to have outlet comps qualify.

Surely they have to be joking if they even think that they can not include the Outlet at this point. I bought a computer from the Outlet on Friday, the day they put up the Win7 upgrade program page, precisely because according to the terms and conditions laid out on the eligibility page, there was no reason an Outlet purchase would not qualify. If they try and come back later and claim that Outlet purchases do not qualify, and that I was not entitled to rely on the eligibility page that they published, I'm going to tear them a new one...

well, technically the license on the Outlet PC is already 'active'... think dell 'reported' to Windows that that Vista license is activated... difficult to play around with these things..

of course, nothing says you can't try and try harder... keep getting new reps/email them... someone might budge

I bought a scratch and dent E6400 from the outlet on June 27th, I received it today and tried to register it for the Windows 7 upgrade and it told me that my laptop was ineligible which didn't make much sense seeing as how I checked the eligibility page and nothing mentioned that it would not be eligible.

Ill send some emails and see what happens.

I read in some other forum that only Refurbished Laptops purchased on or after June 29th from Dell Outlet are eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 7. I bought mine a E4300 on June 26th and it said I'm not eligible too. Will call the customer service tomorrow and see if they could extend the other to me as well as no where on the original upgrade promo page it said that Certified Refurbished models don't qualify. The only date they gave us was June 26th.

Hi guysl. Beginning today, select Dell Outlet products will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 (taxes, shipping and handling may apply) when available. We will have more details online later this week. In the meantime, sales reps should have the skinny if you want to call in - 1-866-492-6720 (M-F 7am-7pm CT)

Sorry, no. The system would need to be purchased between 6/29/09 and 12/31/09 and be listed as eligible here: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/.../dfh/windows-7-consumer?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

Just got a reply from Dell:

"Unfortunately, The company has decided that all refurbished machines in Europe and Asia, will not be eligible for the Windows 7 free upgrade."

But windows 7 may need a bios update, to activate, so you have to be careful which computer you buy, as if they do not update the bios, then your screwed.

If your bios is a new one, around 1 month old, it may be able to activate windows 7.

How would the bios affect whether you can activate windows 7 or not?

It shouldn't. Racking my brains to think of a reason and I can't.
