For example, if one re-installs the OS from the Dell provided DVD and then restarts one's computer, would one see the Dell's OEM black logon screen or the "hummingbird" logon screen of Microsoft Retail version?

Dell OEM.....The copy you get with your computer is always the OEM version not the "full" version....

Ph8te is correct, however you do not get Dell's OEM black logon screen when reinstalling the OS using the DVD Dell provided. You will get the "hummingbird" screen. The logon screen is actually customizable...

The disc should install like a normal OS install, except the OEM information is included so your key will be auto entered and validated unless you try to install it on another system where it will report that the key supplied is invalid and you need to activate.

Can one customize the Factory Install to show the "hummingbird" screen? How would one do that?

I find the Dell's black OPI "nail polish" screen to be a little depressing as the first thing that greets me on my machine!

I've seen a few different things with the newer Dell OS DVDs. They either ask for the key if a Dell BIOS isn't detected (apparently) or they just will NOT work in another system.

I can't say for sure as I don't have a new Dell system yet, but I am pretty sure you could. Check this page out: http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/0...ly-support-logon-ui-background-customization/. I think all you would need to do is change OEMBackground registry key to 0 and restart.
