I'm hoping to get one of these as a present for myself if I get a job in Japan. If HP is getting an upgrade too I'll have to check that out. I like both machines a lot.

I'll have to upgrade the HDD if possible though.

This makes the Mini 10 the FIRST netbook to offer a 1366x768 display! HP has been promising it for the HP Mini 2140 for months, but Dell delivered first.

I'm thinking this will be a big selling point. I have disliked netbooks due to their 1024x576 (or 1024x600) resolution displays. The new display option is the same resolution as a real 16:9 notebook!

Kudos to Dell for only charging $35 for the option, too! I can't imagine anyone ordering a Mini 10 and NOT checking the box for that option! It'll be interesting to see if this helps Mini 10 sales take off. The only potential snag is the HP Mini 2140 when it gets the same display option. The 2140's sexy aluminum body makes the Mini 10 (and almost every other netbook) look frumpy!

They've both been offering it for months, what this means is that the holdup was in manufacturing the displays themselves.
Dell is simply slapping them into place faster, something you may or may not actually want.

With it's color options, I'd say the Mini 10 is the best looking netbook out there. The 720p display is great - the only thing missing now is the 6-cell battery and $50 price cut.

They've both been advertising that it will be available from the intro of the products (Mini 10 and Mini 2140)...but not "offering" it until it actually appeared on the option list available for ordering.

I find myself wondering if the cpu/ram card from a mini10 will fit in place of the cpu/ram card in the mini12.
