    Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new dev machine in the next 6 months or so and I really like the design of the Dell M2010, however it does not have the components I need. Does anyone know if this 'notebook' will receive a Santa Rosa chipset and DX10 GPU update in the near future? Contacting Dell support directly yields the standard "we do not know at this time" response.

(I've posted a similar message in the Clevo forums asking about their 20" model -- I apologize if this is seen as cross threading, but it seemed appropriate as I have the same questions about both Dell and Clevo).

There are really 3 things I like about the M2010, does anyone know if these features are available in other notebooks?

    - Built in handle (close the clam-shell and walk away with it, no worries about large/heavy notebook slipping out of my hands and I don't have to take the time to put it in a case).

    - 20" display (I plan on occasionally sitting a few feet away and like the larger display).

    - Detachable wireless keyboard (once again, plop the beast down on the coffee table, relax on the couch and keep on working).

    Thanks!

Huh, the m2010 is apparently just like that mALX of Alienware, they will probably not update them anytime soon because those notebooks were (I read somewhere) made especially for the components at that time.

By the way...what could an upgraded m2010 do better than a brand new m1730? If you use a 20" LCD and a wireless keyboard with it you have a much better machine and it is a bit cheaper too....and the m1730 is much more portable than the m2010.

The only benefit is that the 20" LCD and the keyboard are integrated. My goal is to be able to close the notebook, pick it up, carry it inside the house (I work from home in a separate home office) and continue working (during crunch mode) from the comfort of the couch so I can at least be in the same room as my wife and kids. Also on occasion my wife needs me to watch the kids during normal office hours, and instead of telling my clients I need to take a few hours off, I could easily transport my workstation into the house where I can be there for the kids with minimal impact on my work schedule.

My runner-up plan is to do exactly what you recommend. I will probably purchase a nice 17" notebook (M1730 or D901C) and pick up a couple of extra wireless keyboards and power adapters that I can leave in both the office and the house. That way it's still very easily portable (without having to make multiple trips back/forth). However if the M2010 gets the component upgrades I need, then it would be even easier for me. It really sounds like that isn't going to happen though, so I'll investigate the 17" notebooks in more depth.

    Thanks for your responses!
