Well...I went to re install some software that I was having trouble with today and guess what. The drive does not read the disc and spits it out when I try to access it from My Computer, I have tried several disks and I even tried to uninstall the Driver and reinstall it. At this point in time what should I do?

First I would try to boot the computer from cd (to check the hardware)
If everything is ok, start the Nero Info tool to see the details of your optical drive and the firmware version. go to www.rpc1.org and check about new firmware and flash it!

So I tried applying the Firmware an no fix. I wish this did not happen. I don't want a Dell Mechanic Coming to my house to take apart my laptop. This sucks! Any other suggestions from anyone before I make the dreaded phone call to Dell!

If you feel confident enough to replace the drive yourself (which isn't hard, just time consuming and requires patience), you can ask for them to send out just the parts instead of a tech.

I have a lot of patience and have done work on computers before. This just frustrates me. I can't believe this. It seems like it wants to get up to speed then slows back down. And the funny thing is, it plays a dvdl but spins at very minimal speed!

Nice find on the firmware site. I never knew about that one.

As far as your problem.. Try booting from a CD, if that does not work, or it spits it out, call Dell to get it replaced.

I am currently running Dell Diagnostic off of the Dell Drivers CD to see if it catches anything. But it is spinning, this is extremely strange!

Try deleting the driver, don't re-install it and reboot- your os will find the best driver available....

    sometimes that helps...........

I think your problem is in the OS, if there is nothing you can do, re-install the OS.

Is the drive running in Ultra DMA mode? Check the IDE channel in Device Manager.

Maybe some of the CD/DVD Recording software has changed the driver setings or something else, there are knowing bugs on NeroBurningROM releated to this problem.

Would have been better to include this info in your original post don't you think? Gives a little more credibility to your answer.
