Let's just speculate on the release date... my call is first/second week of November, just in time for the Holiday season though I hope it'll be out sooner. I don't know what Dell is waiting for, maybe a new gpu from Ati/Nvidia to stuff the thing with.

Has anyone heard which GPU it will be or what ATI/Nvidia might be releasing?

I guess this is the Million Dollar Question.

Drumfu- those specs definately wont be the M140 specs...it'll be customisable sonoma chipset, and the wireless will certainly be at least b/g. Also, in earlier articles about the XPS line, there was an indication that Windows Media Centre 2005 would be the operating system, otherwise they would probably include XP pro, since it is such a high end system. And as a new top-end machine, it's going to have an option of dedicated PCI-Express graphics.

it was a package deal. not customizable. none of the packages included anything other than integrated graphics.

it's also the british version which may ultimately differ slightly from the US version.

the xps m170 comes with home, mce or pro so i'm sure what you're basing your assumptions on regarding the OS

As stated by a member of another forum, DELL’s going to release a new Inspiron 630m 14.1-inch TFT widescreen,… see the links:
    http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/YXgtZbg.html
    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/to...dt1&l=en&s=bsd
What I’m trying to figure out is if this has nothing to do with the XPS M140 or if the M140 is going to be a very similar system, maybe with dedicated graphics or high-end features, say a sort of “spin off” system based on the 630m platform. What do you think?

Somebody on NBF already has pictures of the M140 and it looks very similar to the 6000/9300 with that silver and white trim. No word yet on the card, but we're looking at a 7300/7400 or 7600 unless ATI announces something soon...

check this link: http://dell.com/xps11 it's not active but I received the XPS Exprience cataglog and it listed the M140: integrated graphics, truelife screen option, battery sticks out like the 700m but it looks like a smaller version of the inspiron 6000

Link's broken. But besides that, that's a huge disappointment, even worse than my lowest expectations if it turns out to be true. How can Dell make the new model WORSE than the old one which at least had a MR 9000. Looks like Sony has the 14" dedicated graphics arena all to itself...

    DELL XPS M140 / Inspiron 630m:
    5-in-1 media reader
    OPTIONAL 14.1" TrueLife display
SHARED DDR SDRAM (I guess they expect gaming from "intergrated graphics" LOL)
5.5lbs, about 1/2 pound more than the Inspiron 600m
According to the catalog, price starts at $999

do they? Toshiba, Asus, BenQ, Acer and Compal have 14" models with dedicated graphics. Of which the Asus W3V and Chembook 2030 (Compal EFL30) is the most popular.

I still can't believe it; maybe the entry-level machine would come with integrated graphics while the high end would definitely have a dedicated gpu (pretty much like the early i6000 and the i6000D). Otherwise buying a 5.5lbs notebook with integrated graphics would be nonsense to me.

I agree if this does not have a good video card it is worthless. I expect better than the ATI x700 in this PC. It is supposed to be a part of the "Lexus" XPS line.

Err, let me rephrase. It's the only 14" laptop with the X700 class of card in it. All the others have X600 or below. There are certain isolated models (Asus) that do contain the X700, but in practice, I have never seen them sold in any appreciable amount at any reputable store. Sorry for the confusion.

The specs I have listed come from the BASE model of the M140. Dell did not release any further details about models higher up the chain. There is still hope....

Toshiba Tecra M3 is a long selling 14" with an Nvidia Go 6600, and Acer has two 14" wxga models with an x700. Asus has neither at the moment.

Err, typo on my part. I'm well aware of the Toshiba models actually, but they aren't sold in stores and very, very few people have ever talked about them. (similar to the case with the Acer)

a shame indeed -_-.. i was actually waiting to see this thing get a 6600go card or better.. and silver and white design on this thing doesnt seem right an xps system should be at least related somewhat to the other xps systems.. a metal lid would be nice however.

Well what a let down dell. IGP? Where's the bloody 6800 or 7800. Why call it a member of the XPS family when it doesn't have what makes a gaming laptop a gaming laptop, a graphics card.

This is just weird. And it was turning out to be a nice machine.

Cool thing is that I customized it similarly to what I have on my 9300 and it came a dollar under $2,000. And if there was a graphics card then it would still probably be less.

    Oh well.

Yes, actually this does seem to be the same thing. As the Canadian website only has the new i630m while the US site has the XPS M140 and NOT the 630m. So I think it is safe to conclude these two names are for the same machine. THAT machine being an XPS is bizzare but does make sense being something named in between the 700m and 6000, thus 630m. Anywho, XPS M140 and 630m have same specs but Canadian website is a quite a bit more expensive then on the US site (Yes with conversions accounted for).

What a shame. dell could have at least given the option of having a good video card on it . Now it is a joke.

Even the 6000 had the option of an x300.

as of now dell is probably trying to encourage people into buying their 14 inch "luxury line" when it just consist of few minor upgrades from the 600m.. not xps visual material to me at all.. mines well just name is a 610m..

I imagine Dell will release a XPS M140 with dedicated graphics in a few months, that is, if they want to sell the ****ed thing. A XPS with dedicated graphics is like the new H3 (Hummer3). What's the point? Dell did need to release 14" widescreen competator as they didn't have any home notebooks in that arena. But still. Hopefully they will update it with at least ATI X600 graphics so the people interested in purchasing this product can have slight XPS performance.

XPS no longer means high-end gaming rig. Premium products don't always need to have decidated graphics. These are multimedia Media Center laptops, and for the mainstream or even for the wealthy looking for a premium solution, they don't need the dedicated graphics.
