I haven't been here is a good long time, 2006. I've just purchased a new Dell M1330. Led to purchase it because it had an available HDMI port to link to my LCD. I'll admit it, I've been led to believe that I will mess things up IF I try to do the basic set up out of the box WITHOUT GeekSquad help. So, I'm sitting here looking at my new computer paranoid! I wussed out and paid Geeksquad last time to set up my HP laptop and make the basic wireless network here at my home.

SO, can I do this, or is there some secret steps? I'm ashamed to even show my face here with such non-sense, but I'm here doing it anyways!

    Thanks so much, Kevin

What exactly do you need to set up? If it's just the laptop itself, all you need to do is plug in the power cord and whatever peripherals you want to use and you're set. If you're trying to set up a wireless network from scratch, it might be a little bit more difficult...

I've got an existing linksys WRT54GS set up to my HP laptop, so I'm running on that network with the HP now. So, is it just a matter of hooking into that network. I had GeekSquad set up that wireless network, and I have the original paper work with the password, encrytion Key, channel ect here. Will it be a bit easier with that, or no?

Dude, just turn on your laptop, search for wireless networks, and if your network is password protected, type in the password when asked. That simple. Really, Geek Squad is just trying to make money.

Yeah setting up a laptop is pretty straightforward, and if you know to connect your HP laptops to other WiFi networks (i.e. when you are travelling), then setting up the m1330 to work on your network will be the exact same. Please do not pay Geeksquad to come and do this.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router. Basically, all you have to do is go on your M1330, look for wireless connections, and click on your network (you should obviously know the name, since you named it). (By the way, I'm assuming you want to do this wirelessly; you can also make a direct connection to your modem, set up the network, and then unplug the direct connection if you prefer but I've never done it that way.) Once you do that, you will be asked for the password to your network, which you should also know because you set it. Give the password, click on "always connect to this network" and you're done.

That's simple. Trust me, I just started using a wireless router about a month ago when I bought my M1530 and I know how to do it.

OK, tried to hook up to my linksys, and it connects BUT says that I can't connect to the internet. I'm on a local network currently, whatever that means, and IPv6 connectivity is Limited, whatever that means! Access is Local only. So, I'm closer, but nowhere! According to my old GeekSquad notes, I'm on a QPA2-PSK encryption type, if that helps. And it tells me that I'm connected to a Unidentified network.

The wireless network connection status tells me this
    IPv4 connectivity: local
    IPv6 Connectivity: limited
    media state: enabled
    speed: 36 Mbps

    Activity

    sent 97 packets Received 0

Presto, I'm connected! Turned off the router per the built in trouble shooting instructions. Now, can anyone help me with hooking up my wireless printer?!
