Quick question. What's the difference between the Dell Latitude X300 and the Dell Inspiron 300m? The Inspiron is way cheaper but the specs look pretty much the same

There's only one difference, the Dell Latitude X300 is sold through the business channel and the Dell Inspiron 300m is sold through the Home consumer channel. The Latitude comes standard with a 3 yr. warranty, the Inspiron is only 1 yr. standard warranty. However, since the 3 yr. standard warranty is more expensive for Dell to honor you'll generally find the 300m is cheaper relative to the X300 when the hardware specs are all the same.
To answer bluntly though, they are the same hardware and were released at exactly the same time. -
I don't get why the big price difference? I mean other than the fact that the Latitude is much more sophisticated looking. Does that warrant such a price increase? Why would anyone choose the x300 over the 300m?
-
it likely just depends on the deals that are being run at the time in the business versus the home shopping area too. How much of a price difference are you seeing because the prices should be within $300 of each other.
-
I have seen both the X300 and the 300M and the casing of the X300 looks to be more durable, relative to its small size of course. They do have the same specs but for buyers like myself, a college student, the discounts that Dell gives for education purchases makes both models just about the same price. That is because to go through my University to purchase a Dell I have to purchase the 3 yr warranty to get the discounted price. In my case the X300 is the better bet. Abaxter is right too it depends what sort of special Small Business is offering compared to Home. Dell has become the master of discount codes and changes them often!

well, I'm in Canada so I go thru Dell.ca. THere's like a $1000 difference between the two because there a bunch of specials with the 300m Like 200-300 off, 150 of the cd-dvd drive and free shipping. Ok. I'm gonna get the inspiron. THanks a bunch guys.

Are you getting the Mediabase as well or just the external drive? Enjoy they truly are ultraportable.
-
The d-bay. My friend has the mediabase and she advised me to get the d-bay instead. easier to tote around if you need it. I'm so psyhced about this 3 pounder. I'm currently using an 8 pound HP and it's hell. I never knew 8 pounds could be so heavy after carrying it around all day. Plus the HP battery sucks big time. I only get 1 hr 45 mins out of it. And I bought it new in Aug 2002. So I end up pluggin in each class. I got the extended batteyr with the Dell so I hope that covers me.

You will have to let me know what you think about it after you receive it. I am also in the laptop market and am considering getting the 300M. I am envious of you, but I am sure you will enjoy it greatly!! I saw someone with the X250 with mediabase at a local bookstore and the laptop looked really nice. I am a college student that has a laptop now that weighs almost 8 lbs. as well. I just bought a new desktop so don't need a laptop that is a desktop replacement but one that I don't mind lugging to campus. Good luck with your system and let me know what you think when you get it!!
-
I really do not know. I am interested to hear you feedback once you have your hands on your new 300M. I mainly just use the laptop on campus for word processing and to get onto the campus' wireless network. I guess if I had many browser windows open while using CAD or an Economic modeling program I would notice but if I needed to do all that I would probably be using my desktop in the first place. Good luck with your system and stay in touch.

Yes, I'll let you know how it goes. Yeah man, down with the 8 pounders. The only thing I'm scared of with the 300m is that it may be slower than my HP. The Dell is 1.2 wherease my HP was 1.7. Do you think that's gonna make a huge differnce? I know you gotta sacrifice somewhere for portability.

I have a PM 1.0 in my notebook and I haven't found a single thing it can't handle. I'm just a general office and web user with limited gaming and multimedia thrown in.

And oops, I meand 384MB not 684MB !!!!
-
and i meant 30-40GB. Sorry, I must be on crack today.
Grace -
Which one would you choose if you could only do one?
1. Upgrade from 258MB DDR to 684MB DDR
2. Upgrade the hard drive from 30 to 30GB
Both would cost me $100. I only need to do one so I can reach the price amount that would give me $300 off. hehehe -
That's $100 Canadian

LOL - you can edit your posts [ ]
I'd do the extra 512 RAM, without a doubt, if you don't plan on future upgrades. If you do want to budget for future upgrades, I'd get the HDD now, as that's more painful to upgrade later.

Grace,
Anytime you can updgrade your memory, do so. I would recommend getting the memory upgrade.
Enjoy your notebook! -
Thanks guys and sorry about the messed up posts. I'm off my crack today and doing much better [ ]

I brought a new 300m , the only thing wrong its gets a little warm on the top right side of the laptop, There is no fan control to switch the fan to cool the cpu down, otherwise it's great, I brought the extended battery, it adds another inch to the width but it lasts almost 6 hours, the D Bay can be used for the floppy harddrive, and optical drives.
-
I wish I could the fans to run but they won't, otherwise it good, you can run harddrive module in the Dbay or media bay if you need to back up you stuff, floppy drive also works, There is no difference in 300x and 300m except the color they both used the same batteries, modules, ram etc. replacing the harddrive is the only pain you have take the keyboard off to get to it
