    Hello all!

I purchased a Dell Inspiron laptop via www.dell.com and had it shipped at my Auntie's House. They already got the laptop. My sister will be arriving home next week here at the Philippines to hand carry the Laptop.

    Now the question is:
Is there really a need to get a "Permit to Export" to be able to bring my Laptop outside the US? and bring it home.

I will be using this Laptop for Home / personal use only.

We emailed DELL and they replied with this.

If you have bought a laptop in the US and brought it outside the US. Please give me some information, To avoid any problems that might arise in the Airport. Thanks!

When you were checking out, did you click that box that said your laptop can be exported?

Yes we did. But my sister said that there is no letter or permit to export attached when the Laptop Box was delivered.

I didnt have a problem when I left the USA with a laptop in my bag in the airport. I dont suppose they will make any fuss about a computer intended for personal use. But well, if you try to take 4 or more laptops with you, assuredly that will be a problem. One of my friends recently brought 3 laptops from USA. He didnt go through any problems.

I hope there won't be any problems when my sister leaves the US for a flight back here in the Philippines, I just ordered 1 Laptop.

But I am still wondering why did Did Dell asks whether I need to export / bring this Laptop outside the US or not upon check-out?

Thanks again for the Quickreply SG and irfan.

    just a speculation:
the term export is generally used when you are going to sell the goods at another country. So probably, that option is for such customers who will sell the notebook abroad. But I must say, this is pure specualation of mine.

Don't worry at all dude......I have had this done a no. of times. A lot of my friends n family have had their laptops bought in the US and then brought to India. No legal hassles whatsoever. Anyone can bring it for you. Just make sure if questioned, your sis makes it clear that the laptop is for her personal use and not for resale.

    Hope this helps

In your case, you are not selling the notebook and no need to get a permit to export. However to avoid problem returning home (USA) with the notebook. You can file the notebook with the US custom service before you leave. I have been traveling overseas (mainly Asia) twice a year and never did that anyway. Never have problem with the US Custom Agents when returning home. Certain country you enter will require you to declare it to avoid tax. Such as China.

I don't know about the permit thing, but Dell does have the option that you must say yes/no if you plan on exporting the laptop outside of the U.S.

In terms of dell, this does not mean you are selling the laptop, but rather traveling with it. If you chose yes, then dell makes sure that the laptop is in compliance with federal regulations.

Ok. At least now I know that many of you have already done that without any problems.

I just got a little confused with DELL asking me whether I am planning to export the laptop outside US.

    Thanks a lot guys!
