    Hi

Just a few days ago I noticed this problem. I have had this laptop for almost a year already.
For some reason I cannot get the audio to function at all on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I went to control panel audio and unmuted it (it was on mute for some reason) but still no sound at all. HOWEVER when I plug in headphones I can get sound, but when I take it out, the audio is cut off again.

What is the problem? Can I fix this myself? How can I best pursue Dell and what steps should I think? I believe I have the extended warranty for this laptop but I want some advice on how to get through with this with as little hassle as possible.

Lastly, I also believe that my DVD burner has some problems(always has been but I never bothered to pursue it) because the disks that comes out of it are never playable. What should I do to let Dell know about all these? I remember spending hours on the phone back then without much help

    Thanks for any advice! :)

Have you tried booting in safemode and check if ever the problem also exist there and you might want to try performing system restore that might and try to uninstall and reinstall the driver for your sound card.

I do not know much about these things. Is there a way for me to just send it directly to Dell? What procedures should I follow? I got some good advice here when buying this laptop last year so I figured I'll come back here for help. Thanks!

Try to call their tech support #. I believe its 1-800-822-8965. Just explain your concern and they will guide you on the troubleshooting.

You should try to reinstall the audio drivers.

Did your system came w/ a resource cd or a drivers and utility cd? If you have that go to safemode first, by the way are you using vista or xp? If your using xp, just go to device manager and then uninstall it there and if its in vista I believe its just the same. Then boot back to normal mode then load the drivers cd if your using xp and look for the audio driver inside the disc. If your using vista I dont think this one have a resource cd or a drivers disc, well go the the dell website @ support.dell.com, just go drivers and downloads and then put in your service tag and select the OS and then it should show you the list of drivers available for the system. Just select the audio driver and download it and then install it.

Go here and select your laptop model and your Operating System (probably XP). It will give you a list of all the drivers available for dell for your system. Don't use any of the ones on your recovery CD because they're probably dated. Just download the audio driver and reinstall it.

Just curious, did re-iinstalling your audio driver help?

My 1505 is also just over a year and I have the same exact symptoms (no sound from laptop speakers, but headphones/external speakers work.

After a chat with a Dell rep using gotoassist trying some of the same fixes, it was rather simple. Open volume control, click advanced, unclick PC spk mute and (perhaps) SPDIF Interface.

    Got sound now!
