    Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Dell E1705 laptop with:

    2.16MHz C2D CPU
    2GB of memory
    GeForce Go 7900 GS
    WUXGA screen
    7200 RPM SATA hard drive

The computer has a front-side bus of 667 MHz, but Dell is only offering the memory at 533MHz.

The computer will be my main gaming system, so performance is an issue. Will the memory speed cause a noticeable problem?

Are there any other brands I should consider that will get me similar performance at a similar price?

    Thanks.

There is no other comparision--the dell e1705 is the most laptop for the money. It is the corvette of laptops if you will, cheap but quick :) You likely will not notice a large difference with the speed of the RAM, because likely you will not be able to find 667 ddr2 with a comparable CAS latency to 533 DDR2. If you are planning to upgrade yourself, as I recommend, buy the minimum amount of RAM dell offers and then take the money saved and go shop at newegg.com. OTher than thatlooks like a sweet machine.

i'm not sure where you got your information, but it's incorrect.

probably the most popular brand on this forum is transcend simply because of the price.

the idea that dell parts are "picky" (what does that even mean?) is not true.

You can put any brand of memory in any brand of computer as long as they are compatible. In your case for the e1705 you'll want DDR2.

You could also buy Crucial memory.

Or you could use their memory advisor tool to figure out what type of memory your computer uses to buy from a different brand.

So no, Dell's are no more or less picky than any other brand.

As for why spend the money on a laptop to game? I don't game but I'm pretty sure it's because it is really nice to grab the computer and go or grab the computer and sit on the couch. That is a pain in the butt with a desktop.

I know that I will never buy a desktop again.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll probably end up getting it with the 533 memory and not worry about it (laziness rules!).

Jasonqb is right on why a laptop - combining my TV time with my gaming time means twice as much of each.

no sense in buying a 667 mhz chip if you using 533 mhz ram

    the C2D are all 667mhz

but the advantage of the C2D is that it's 64bit compatible and is also faster then the C1D

i still don't get why people buy gaming laptops

can you REALLY watch tv AND game (as in winning/killing all those other cs players) effectivly?

for games, i will ALWAYS buy a desktop. lappy more for work

core 2 duo only has advantages over C1D

it is much better then the C1D performance wise ~10% faster

it has 64 bit so it's future proof

it costs nearly the same as C1D in dell

it uses the same amount of power, or sometimes less then the C1D

core 2 duo is not a waste, a great purchase if you don't already have a C1D

just not worth upgrading C1D to C2D though
