Can anyone tell me what brand or brands does dell use (hard drives) in the xps laptops. i ask this because I purchased a refurb and think the hard drive was swapped out. It has a 160gb segate momentus in it. My buddy has an xps m1330 but he has figitsu... then my coworker has a Hitachi in his. this seems strange to me. shouldn't they all be the same brand please advise.

No, they use what ever is cheapest at that given moment it is made. Prices change daily for dell, and they buy what is cheapest for them. Same with their ram.

    Safe side of what?

Yea they heep it with the CPU and RAM serial #'s, oh and also the USB serial #'s. No just kidding, highly doubt they keep track of placement of individual #'s. It would serve no effective purpose for them. They likely deal in what I would call "lots", insofar as they could give you information about the HDD that was say 1 of a thousand of which they know the serial numbers but not which was put in a particular notebook.

But what is the sinister nature of the "they swapped out", I am missing something here?

the hard drive is making a cliking noise. The compter has a t9300 core 2 duo so I know its a fairly new refurb from dell outlet.. its just strange that the hard drive is making this clinking noise. a few time the I got an error at boot up that says boot disk failed. I don't know how to fix. that is why i need to know if the hard drive in the system is the original hence it may be the reson it was sold to me on the outlet store. or i need to find if they let consumers get warranty replacemnt from driver maker or pc builder

Did you buy a warranty package when you bought the system from Dell? In any case, you should have recieved at least a 1 year warranty with the notebook. You should just call technical support and ask for a hard drive replacement.
