Hey guys, when I look around at specs of dell inspiron/xps notebooks I see that they mention the hard drives having freefall sensors. I'm wondering is this something new that's only included on specific hard drives or has it been a feature that they haven't bothered mentioning until now?

... I though they were pretty standard, maybe not?

Its not so much a dell thing, but who ever your Drives manufacture is. Its where if the laptop is dropped, there is a sensor that detects this, and parks the Heads in the harddrive to minimize damage.

Sorry, I think I didn't phrased my question correctly. What I'm trying to ask is Have all the hard drives Dell has been shipping have this feature included or is it only on specific hard drives?

i don't think dell has this. I'm also pretty sure there are different implementations of the sensor, because some need external software to work (which i think is stupid; my philosphy is that most things should be firmware/hardware based)

According to Dell's build website, they don't all have freefall protection. In fact, the default one for the XPS m1530 did NOT. My upgraded 7500rpm driver did have the freefall sensor.

the original ones shipped out didn't have it. From about the time the high res screens came out, the free fall sensors were added in. Pretty much if you shake your computer and have the proper drivers installed. you'll get a popup message saying that the hard drive has been locked to prevent data loss until vibrations stop.
