On the Dell website, The Inspiron 1420 can be ordered with a TFT screen, while the Vostro 1400 comes with an LCD.

What's the difference between the two? I've heard that both of them are LCD screens but TFT screens are supposed to be better than the regular LCD screens. Is that true?

If the TFT is supposed to be better, that is it better by a great degree or are there very minor differences?? How are viewing angles on regular LCD screens?

And, are the WXGA LCD screens offered on the Vostro glossy screens or are they matte? The Dell website doesn't explicitly state which is which

    Thanks

TFT is an LCD technology, so both terms are interchangeable.

When both TERMS are interchangeable it implies that the technology is the same and that there is no difference in quality at all.

    Rational thinking is a gift.

10 years ago (or more) you needed to be careful when purchasing a laptop because you wanted to make sure the display was an active matrix TFT display.

Nowadays, they are ALL made with that technology......

    Indeed it is, wiseguy.

So can you explain this link: http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/154532.html
    (Read Response Number 2)

...And also, why is it that, if the two are the same, than people on other sites on the net insist on choosing TFTs instead of regular LCDs?
Obviously, if they're the same, then it shouldn't make a shred of difference, right?

Can you tell those guys in your link know what they are talking about?
They cannot even tell the difference between CRT and LCD.

TFT is the technology used to make LCD screens.

Actually they were previously using STN based LCD displays (known as passive matrix displays) but now everyone have switched over to TFT based LCD displays (active matrix displays).... So you need not worry ;)

Years ago I'd never buy a laptop because I couldn't tell the dif between active & reg matrix lcd & plasma, and didn't wanna make the wrong choice. Worry not, just get an LCD. Except for backlighting, they're all the same these days.

Don't know whether they "actually" existed or not, but I'll tell you this: I saw several of them advertised as such in the "Computer Shopper" ads many years back. Like I said, confusing.
