My Dell Inspiron Laptop is a bit old. It has a 17inch 1920*1200 resolution screen/display. I've kept this laptop for web surfing since it has such a nice > HD resolution and they don't cut panels like this anymore. However, the screen now goes dark after 2 seconds. When I boot it up or awaken it from sleep mode that's all I get before it goes black. It's not totally black, if I look really closely I can see the windows. I've searched the forums and found someone with a similar issue on a Panasonic laptop. Below is the first reply that was given in that thread:
"I would first check the cables to the CCFL and be quiet to listen for any sparking sound between the cables and the chassis, while u start the laptop. The second check would be to connect another CCFL from an other display to verify, if the CCFL is bad or good.
And the last try would be to check the PWM-signal with an oscilloscope or multimeter, while u change the brightness via Fn-F1/F2."
My laptop has that "sparking sound" sometimes when I turn it on/revive it from sleep mode. Rarely, say every 50th time I turn it on, the screen actually works (I'm currently running it with an attached monitor in mirror mode to type this). Since my laptop has this sound, what is the likely problem with my display?

Sparking sounds are a indication from a bad lose connection between electrical things, while a voltage differential is existing and a current is trying to flow.
Could be a loose conection of a soldering point on a pcb.
Could be a rub trough isolation of a cable. (Look close to the bended flex cable at the hinge and the cables direct to the CCFL)
Could also be burned pcb or a burned resistor/capacitor in the high voltage path.
Open it, have a look and listen
