Hi,
The Inspiron's speakers intermittently stop working until finally they just didn't work. The strange thing is sound works well with headphones or external speakers. Any guesses on what's wrong? The volume button has been checked, mute setting have been checked. The sound pretty much works perfectly from headphones so that suggests hardware problems with the speakers? The computer shows all audio and speaker drivers are properly installed and functional. It just passed the 1 year warranty period.
Not much comes up when I do a forum search for broken speakers. Have any of you guys seen a similar case with other Dells? Anyone know how much this would cost to repair? Perhaps someone knows how to physically go in and replace the speakers. Would a full system restore be an unfavorable last resort? Thanks guys.

I had the opposite. My speakers worked great, but my headphone jack was screwed up. My guess is that it is hardware. You could try to fix it yourself if you don't want to expand your warranty. Another option is just to get a portable speaker set and use that.

Sounds like an equipment fault to me. I wouldn't bother with software related stuff, don't think that will help. I guess the better question is what's it worth to you to get them fixed? I don't see any round trip to Dell for service being under $100.

I heard a friend of mine telling me that same probelm with his computer... It is an Inspiron 6000, and it happened about a week after the warranty expired. He told me it wasn't all the time at first, and that sometimes when he moved the computer around sound came back, but I think now it is permanent.

Most likely, the motherboard needs to be replaced. If he can't afford that and if the headphone jack is working, buy a good pair of portable speakers and use them.

OH NO! The same thing has just happened to me and I was hoping it would be an easy fix! Right now I found that if I stick a paper clip in the ring around the headphone jack, that it brings the sound back. It makes me wonder if it has something to do with the position of the headphone jack...
