    Hi:

    I'm shopping for a mid-range 15" laptop for my sister, $400-$800.
    She wants Windows 7

    Any opinions on this one?

Is the screen good on that one? (She can't see a 1920x1050 screen, as things are too small, so lower resolution not a problem as long as screen is sharp and bright.)

I have a Dell XPS 15 L502X myself, so I know how good a good screen can be, and how poor some screens can be on other laptops.

Any alternatives I should consider? I'd be willing to get a higher-end Inspiron, but she doesn't want Windows 8. If I got one, would I have to buy Windows 7 off eBay or somewhere to install it?

    Opinions welcome.

I mean, if you're thinking "IPS quality", I don't think there is any Inspiron that actually has a good screen. It might be decent for TN, though.

Not too sure about your Canada options, but here in the US all of the Inspirons are sold with 8.1, so you would have to buy a copy of 7 if you wanted that.

I do recall reading somewhere that 8.1 Pro licenses can be used to install 7 Pro, but I've never validated that myself, and I don't think any Inspirons ship with 8.1 Pro anyway...

Thanks. That's what I'm asking, of Inspiron users, whether the screens are decent/good. I know they won't be as good as what's on my XPS 15.

There are two Inspirons available from Dell.ca with Windows 7 (that link shows one of them).

I beg to differ. The 15" 7000 has an excellent display (IPS also), providing you get the 1920x1080 version. The various reviews available bear that out also.
