I am able to get what i think is quite a good deal on a dell inspiron 6000 here are the specs!!! It is £620

Intel Pentium m 1.6 512mb ram, 40gb hd, 64mb raedon mobile graphics, free printer

I can also upgrade it quite cheeply, does anyone think any of this is worth it!!

    Processor upgrade to Pentium M 1.73 = £674

    Ram upgrade to 768 + £674

    Screen upgrage to 1680 x 1050 = £656

Will i noice any differenc ewith any of those upgrades

I don't know how much of a difference you will see between the 1.6 vs 1.73 processor - maybe in some benchmarks you'll see an improvement. I think the RAM upgrade will give you the biggest performance boost. The screen upgrade does nothing for performance - if your eyes can handle a WSXGA+ res, the go for it.

Are you upgrading the RAM from dell? That's a bad idea, because its waaaay cheaper to do it yourself. I found that they charge about 2x as much as it is to buy and upgrade yourself on average.

So, do the CPU upgrade, skip the RAM and do that yourself. That's the best combo in my opinion.

right, there ram upgrade was my own idea using crucial, at least half price of the dell deal, unfortunate that dell is supplying 2 x 256mb as to make it 1gb will require 2 512's

I prob wont bother with the screen, im not all that into the latest games etc, im sure the standard 1200 x 800 will be ok!!

Still un decided about the processer, i honestly do no what to do!!

Well, what kind of applications are you running?

Yep, skip on the screen. I have had two 1280x800 res widescreen notebooks, and I have never had a problem with the resolution on either of them.

If you have time on your hands and try gaming you could become disenchanted quick by the limitations on graphics cards for the 6000. Get the 9300 and there are no limitations (for 150-200 )more. In the 9300 even if you get the minimum card you at least have a chance to buy upwards in the future to the best (replace it with new one).

i believe that if you opt for the x300 on the 9300, you are limited; i.e., you can't upgrade to the go 6800. the most you can do is upgrade the x300 64 mb to the 128 mb (unless dell releases something else).

i'm pretty sure the upgrade path from x300 (64 or 128) to go 6800 is not a valid one.
