I'm thinking about getting a new laptop for gaming and media use. I have come across the Dell Inspiron XPS with 3.4Ghz processor and 1Gb memory + Radeon 9700 Mobility.
    Priced around 2000USD on Ebay.

I can see what the 'pros' of this laptop are but I was wondering if anyone could point out the 'cons' in case i've been blinded by the dream of this power machine!

According to one of the discussions in this forum... They say that there is a hardware problem with the screen. It flickers (to the point of making you dizzy) when you lower down the contrast. This only happen when on battery. They tried technical support and after many trials, Dell says that there is a problem with power management with screen. So as of press time, the problem is not resolved.

Although you can still use the screen, but running at higer contrast means lots of power consumption and the battery would drain.

I myself have my eyes for the XPS and planning to buy one until I read that issue. Unless they resolve it, then I hold my decision till that time comes.

Eventually they will... I suggest hold it for the moment.[ :)]

If by any chance, they have fixed the bug... Pls do post it here...[ :)][ :)][ :)]

I don't see how that's a problem. If you get an XPS or 9100, you should immediately throw battery life out the window. So you'll get an extra 20 minutes or so if you lower the brightness and tolerate the flickering. Big deal. You don't buy a computer like that and then complain that the battery doesn't last.

These signatures suck. I always mistake them as part of the post.

I wouldn't buy anything that expensive off of eBay, unless you talk to the manufacturer first. Many people don't know this, but there are quiet a few that will say any warranty is void if it was bought off of eBay.
