I've already tried multiple forums and searches and read hundreds of cases but none of these seem to come close to my problem.

I have inherited a Dell Inspiron 1564 from my mother. It is maybe a year old to date. At first I had a problem with the charger. It wouldn't charge, and the light on it wouldn't come on, so I figured that it was a bad charger. I bought a third party charger only to receive a "does not recognize the charger" message. I figured that it was because it was third party but it managed to keep the laptop running on AC so I was content until I could afford another charger.

Meanwhile, this laptop was being shared with my mother and stepparent and myself. The battery eventually whittled away to 1% forcing the laptop's use to solely AC because it would no longer charge. I was finally able to buy a new charger. I thought it was a Dell charger (bought through Amazon) but I found it was a third party. I no longer received the "does not recognize the charger" message" anymore, but the laptop would no longer power on.

I did a couple tests. When the charger is in and the battery is not, the laptop will power on. However, the battery was close to 0% at the time and still would not charge. When I would put the battery in (while the charger was still plugged in) the laptop would immediately shut off as if it didn't even see the charger to begin with. I bought a new battery (a third party replacement) and it had about 64% charge.

This is when it got weird. Just like before, when the charger is in and the battery is not, the laptop would power on. However, when the battery was in, regardless if the charger was in or not, the laptop would run solely off the battery.

I've recently learned that Dell tends to make their products only use official Dell replacements which could easily empty my wallets quickly. I'm not sure if this is a hopeless situation, but I would like to know why this is happening at least and if there is any hope for remedying the situation. If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

If you're using a known-good, genuine Dell charger and a known-good genuine Dell battery, and it still doesn't work, then there is a problem with your motherboard, and you will have to replace it.

    Hi,

As Commander Wolf mentioned, if you are using a genuine Dell Charger and the Battery; the only possible troubleshooting step that you can try is updating the BIOS to the latest version. If that doesn’t help, issue may be due to the motherboard. You may consider getting it serviced.

Please use the below mentioned link to view/download the BIOS versions available for Inspiron 1564

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks & Regards
