Okay, I just got my Dell Inspiron 1525, and honestly, I like the notebook, but it looks like it was a rushed job on my notebook. The LCD screen is slightly off center, the chasis has some scrap plastic on it, the buttons on the keyboard look like they are sinking into the notebook as well as the "F" keys not even straight but slanted, the speaker grill area with the touch strip and all looks bent down, and lastly the audio is barely audible.

How does Dell handle a return like this? I paid $968 on it and I want my same configuration, but I don't want to be charged restocking fees, and I know the people from India, Inc. will just place my order wrong.

    What do I do???

Forgot to ask, if I place a new order now, can I just have the defective unit sent back for refund and not be charged a restocking fee?

You need to contact Dell and arrange for a return before purchasing a new one.

I recommend a return, followed by a reorder...because Dell will probably promise you a new exchange unit and actually send you a refurb unit.

Okay, I contacted Dell and after I went through the 4 things wrong with the Dell Inspiron 1525, he said he would have a new notebook made for me, and was kind enough to give me next day shipping (although he didn't say it on the phone).

I asked if it was going to be a brand new unit and not a refurbished unit and he said it would be brand new. I was checking my Dell account while we were talking on the phone and he spoke the new order number to me after it showed on my Dell accouint first.

I sent an e-mail earlier for a Return Authorization Number, but it takes like 24 hours for them to respond. Should I be concerned about the e-mail even though I just got done resolving it over the phone this evening?

The man said he would just have a new one made for me and include the return shipping instructions in the box for my current one. They were hesistant to just have me return the notebook for a refund when I asked.

Greg, or anyone else who knows, if they would be sending me a refurbished unit, how would I know it is refurbished???

Refurbished units have a sticker on the bottom. in some cases it`s the only way you can tell.

What would the sticker say, besides "Refurbished"? I would really like to know if anyone can help. My new replacement laptop says "In Production" and not due to ship until about June 26th or 27th. Wouldnt refurbished units ship like within 1-2 days?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

If it doesn't say "Refurbished" then it's 100% brand new. No and if's or buts. Dell could get sued big time if they gave you a refurbed under the mislead impression it was brand new.

I recently had a similar situation to yours. I purchased a Vostro 1500. It had several problems. I called and they said they would build me another one and put a rush on the build and give me next day shipping. Just like you as soon as I hung up I checked my account and a new Order# was created. It took about 4 days to build because it was escalated as a priority build.

And that's the key. If they didn't tell you your new order was going to be prioritized then you'll have to wait longer to get it. ;)

The guy didn't say it was going to be prioritized or anything like that, but my order status screen shows "In Production" with an estimated ship date of June 26th which is a Thursday and I noticed I got next day shipping, that was from today calling them with the order made on June 20th.

I don't know if they build computers over the weekend. I asked him politly if it was going to be brand new or refurbished, and he said "brand new". I believe I talked to someone overseas, he sounded Indian with kind of an American Texan Mexican accent, so I don't know where in the World I was routed to.

He said nothing about my order being prioritized and such, he just needed 2 minutes to make my new order from my previous order and when he got back on the phone with me, he gave me my new order number which was immeadiatly posted online to my Dell account. He also said they are not allowed to re-customize a new order replacing the defective one.

Okay, so what I am getting from your input is that if it has a sticker reading "Refurbished" on it, it is refurbished and if not, then no sticker, period? I was reading carefully over the whole Dell Return Policy and I was getting worried a refurbished unit would be sent to me.

Even if only 1 part is refurbished and the rest is new, does Dell still put a "Refurbished" sticker on it? Where is the sticker generally put?

Anything else I need to know???

    ... Yes, I worry A LOT ...

If there isn't a "Refurbished" sticker on the bottom of the laptop then it's "NEW". I'm not a lawyer but when you sell something as new it has to be a certain percentage as new. In other words you can't use refurbed parts. I have no doubt that Dell uses new parts when they are building and selling new computers. ;)
