When I insert either a cd or a dvd, it does not autoplay, instead it opens in explorer so I can see the files but the dvd files does not play, the cd files play but sound choppy and distorted, before ordering a new drive I would like to make sure this not a hardware problem, how can I do so please?

Metamorphical Good computer user
Did you try with more than one media player? Could be a codec. Might try updating the codecs.
If that doesn't work...
Go to run and type MSConfig. Change to selective startup. Then go into the startup tab and click disable all. Next click on the services tab and check the box that says 'hide all Microsoft services'. Reboot and test,
If that doesn't work go back into MSConfig and change back to a normal start up. Enable all in both startup and services tab and try once more. If that doesn't work you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the dvd/cd driver and that failing replace the drive. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
What OS is this? Autorun settings are in control panel.
I would try the upper/lowers filters fix, just Google it. -
The OS is XP Media center, I am installing Medial player classic right now to see if as you've said t may be a codec problem, get back to you in a few, thanks.
