Nope, I have not heard of that problem. Are you under warranty? Which video device do you have? What OS are you running?

Are you able to hook up an external monitor to see if the output to it is also affected when you connect the AC?

That sounds like the panel's backlight is going. It's curious though as to why it only acts up when on AC power.

There is no easy way to troubleshoot it. It could be a few things in my opinion, maybe a faulty adapter that isn't providing the correct voltage. It seems though that the inverter is going bad as you say it makes a noise.

IMO it's the power supply. I've seen a similar thing happen. Do you have another to try? I've had many LCD's backlight not power on due to lower than necessary power coming in.

Try changing your power profile to maximum battery and try charging the laptop while it's off. Once fully charged, boot the laptop with it plugged in so that there isn't the extra load of charging the battery on the power supply. If these things remedy it I would put my money on the power brick.

Also might be worth mentioning that you can try messing with the backlight brightness (lower = better) in order to try and get it working again. If it's being starved of electricity though, I would definitely not recommend running it that way if any of these things work.
