I was just wondering, but how are the inspiron's build quality. Is it good/bad, are they like durable??? What if they were stacked against Hp's dv 2000/6000/9000 line or like Acer Aspires or Gateways???

The way I put it is... Dell's are well built for the money.

I could not get a better laptop with better specs than my E1505 for less money from HP, Acer or Gateway.

I got the laptop in my sig for $1250 with a 3 year warranty.

[edit] My E1505 is of higher quality than I thought it would be. It's not flimsy in any way, fans are quiet, power and media buttons have a good feel, keyboard is much better than my last infamous Inspiron 5150.

I only have experience with my friend's inspiron 640m, I'm not really nick picky, I didn't find it feeling cheap or anything. I ordered a m1210 for myself, I played with the demo one at my mall's kiosk and I can tell though it had more metal and stability in the frame, although my friend's 640m has less keyboard flex than the m1210 I was looking at.

Dell's build quality is much better than it used to be. I was pleased with my e1505. It's all plastic, but it's sturdy. Thick, but sturdy. The e1705 is better than the e1505--it has a magnesium-alloy chassis. HP will offer a slightly better build quality.

The Inspiron build quality is pretty good.. Not something you would want to drop on the ground though. HP's are built better but they also cost more. Personally right now I would buy a Dell Latitude if I was going to get a new laptop. But thats me.

eh, that's good, lol do u guys think it will last for at least 3-4 years??? Because i keep on hearing about Dell's being have to be replaced and people having nightmares about their tech support in the states. So if somebody can clarify if Dell Canada is support is good or not that'll be great since I live in Canada. Is complete care a waste of money or is it actually worth it to get it?

Inspirons will usually last 2-3 years from hearing from different people.
All Inspirons are made of ABS Plastic (except for the E1705 which has its case made of mag. alloy) and have build quality very close to other makers. You have to consider, however, the price of the notebook, and factor it into what you're getting.

I have purchased both a M1710 and a Inspiron 6400 in the last 6 months. Both have proven well built imo.

Not sure about consumer line. Business line the tech support's great. It's done by North Americans and you get top notch service.

The closest thing I can compare my e1705 build quality, would probably be an alienware type high end very expensive laptop maker.

Evens puts the quality of these to shame..
