Hello everybody,
I bought a Dell i9400 (or E1705 in some countries) with nVidia 7800 this week. I have noticed a peculiar behavior of the 7800 GPU. The idle temp is around 65-70C. Once it crosses 70C (when on the desktop) it gradually rises to 80C . As soon as it reaches 80C, the fan starts to cool the GPU to 70C and then this process repeats itself.
My core temp never goes above 80C when I am not playing games. However, when I am playing games, the core temp is around 85 - 88C. This is VERY HIGH! FYI, I am using the Xtreme-G Mobileforce 84.56 drivers...Does changing the driver affect the GPU core temp?? I also tried Xtreme-G Mobileforce 83.90 drivers...Now I am using the Dell Stock drivers in order to prevent any damage to the system.
All the GPU gurus out there, please help me out or else this hot plate goes straight back to the dell factory....Please RESPOND!

Some ideas...
Is laptop sitting flat or is the back elevated? Elevating back of lappy to allow more air to enter bottom may help...
or
Get cooling pad.... -
I also went back to the pitiful Dell drivers due to the heat issue. Even with the stock drivers, the behavior is the same. I just figure it's better to let the thing melt down with no fault on my part.
The behavior you describe is identical to what I (and others apparently) are seeing. (see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=52800).
I think it really is due to the way they implemented the design of the 7800. As I mentioned in the other thread - I'd love to see feedback from M1710 owners. I'm guessing DHell went the extra mile on the M1710 design.
I also can't help but wonder why the 7800 was killed so early by nVidia. Just for giggles I was checking out the HP Duo Core lappie - they use the 7400 --- hmmmmm.
You are right - it is a 'hot plate'...

I agree with you guys, my temps are similar....was about 69C idle when OCed
Back to stock now 65C Idle
