Dell Inspiron 9300 17'' Screen

I'd like to here pros & cons about Dell Inspiron 9300 with 17" UltraSharpTM Wide Screen XGA+ Display.
Particularly concerning playing games & sound quality.

Everyone be nice, he wants to make the right LCD purchasing decision is all. 9300 owners, think back to your 'reasearching' days ;o).

 

I bought a 9300 with the wxga+ ultrasharp resolution, no this is not a glossy panel, but it is an ultrasharp. as far as sound quality goes? that has nothing to do with the screen panel but the sound quality is very very good for a laptop thanks to its subwoofer which though small adds significant octave depth to sound. I bought a pair of klipsch laptop speakers for 99 dollars and the sound from them is great. they are 2.0 speakers, I didnt want alot of speakers or a subwoofer cabinet to haul around so im quite satisfied with them.

Now back to the LCD, playing games on a WXGA panel is great, you have plenty of room on the 1400x900 widescreen and because its wxga you can play your games with all the ai/aa filters and other eye candy settings at maximum if you like, something you cannot do on the WUXGA panel.
I prefer the non glossy look of the WXGA panel and it is very bright, text is good sized and easily read. Plenty of room for webpages (no web page supports WUXGA by the way).

As to disadvantages, there are none in my opinion, at least none that deal with the resolution directly. I got a samsung panel model x4766. It is very bright, had alot of light leakage when I first got it but that has disiipated over time and now ist very bad at all, the screen is still quite bright and I seldom use it at the maximum brigthness. The colors are great, especially after tweaking them to my preference in the nvidia control panel and the viewing angles are great. Now people who get the LG screens are generally not as bright but have a little less light leakage, better colors (before adjusting them to your taste) but the anti glare coating is kind of metallic looking and the viewing angles are not as good as the samsung. You can run into these issues whether you get a wxga or wuxga panel. Personally I find Wuxga too high a resolution for a panel this size and while they look nice at the dell kiosk, they are actually running at 1400x900 and not their native 1920x1200 at the kiosk. Text is small on a wuxga panel at its native resolution and not comfortable on the eyes. Those screens are also glossy which means you see background light and your own reflection in the screen all the time which again is something I dont like but most people myself include, would say looks great when looking at a game demo playing on them at a dell kiosk, in real life these screens really tax the video card, decrease battery life and arent comfortable on the eyes when viewing web pages and reading text.

Im perfectly happy with my 9300 and the wxga screen and dont have any regrets for buying this lower resolution. If I had it to do all over again I would buy the same panel.

As I mentioned though you have no control over whether you get an LG or a Samsung and light leakage and the anti glare coating problems some call sparkles can occurr on either samsung OR lg and on both wxga and wuxga.

Which lcd is better? Samsung or LG? That depends on the user, but most seem to like the Samsung better, As I said many say the colors are better on an LG but the viewing angles are poor and the metallic looking sparkle to the anti reflective coating on the lcd panel. With the samsung, you can adjust the colors to your preference and they look every bit as good as the lg colors. With the LG panel, you cannot addjust the viewing angles or make the screen brighter than the samsungs but like I also said, some like LG, some like Samsung, why is there such a wide variance on this topic? Because there are several different lcd models from both of these companies and its anyones guess which one you will get.

I hope this answers some of your questions, games look great on my wxga lcd and you can run them at the native resolution with no problems and max out the eye candy, many games do not support wuxga resolution, making that very high resolution kind of a moot point.

Anyhow, thats my two cents, I have used both lg and samsungs on the 9300 both in wxga and wuxga, I bought the wxga after using both resolution types on both lg and samsung lcd's so my opinions come from using both of them as opposed to just making a baseless opinion as some do based on what they already have or they already heard.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and remember that screen brigthness and colors are not properties of the panels resolution, but of the panel itself and whether its an LG or Samsung and what model, not whether its wxga or wuxga. For some reason people tend to associate properties to the resolution of these panels that have nothing to do with its resolution at all.

Oh yeah, DVD movies look good too, I use nvidia nvdvd player to play them, dvd quality often has alot to do with the software you are using to play them. Using a good player on the wxga panel, they look great and I couldnt be happier with my 9300, it has exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a bunch of hooey in the forums about dell and wxga and so on.

As for sparkles, on my panel they are non existent, there's just a transparent patterned sheen to it that tells me this is and lcd and not a crt monitor. Lcd panels ofcourse are not as sharp and as fast as good old fashioned crt monitors.

with the 6800 go card that I have, I havent had any ghosting of images. As with any LCD screen, Lcd's are not superior to the quality of a regular CRT monitor, they are simply more portable and ofcourse, you cannot get a CRT monitor on a laptop.

 

I bought a 9300 with the 17" UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife (1920x1200) and I am still undecided about the screen. The WUXGA screen looks beautiful and I have bumped up the font size to compensate for the small text (Dell does this by default - but you need to make sure you turn off image resizing), but a few web pages (very few) don't look right with the larger fonts. I have dropped the resolution down to 1680x1050 and 1440x900 and both resolutions look to be good sizes, but they're nowhere near as clear as the native resolution, so I've swiched back to the native.

Having used this monitor for a few weeks, I'm still not too sure I would've been happier with the lower res (1440x900) screen -- I absolutely love playing Guild Wars at 1920x1200 at 2x anti-aliasing!

I would highly recommend you try to see both of the screens in person before buying.

 

This is a good example of too much of a good thing, no web pages support 1920x1200 and owners of the wuxga have to do quite a bit of tweaking to make things look right. Its unfortunate they didnt offer a WXSGA resolution for the 9300.
Depending on the web browser you are using there are several tweaks wuxga owners use, stop by notebookforums.com and see if you can find some helpful hints there, use the search function.
