Hello All -
I have a dell Inspiron 9100 notebook .. with Pentium 4 HT Processor on it (Hyper threading). Now it looks like the processor wont work. everything else seem to be fine in the system, except the processor... Its a 478 socket type mother board.
I want to replace the processor...
1. Can i replace the processor?
2. If so... what are my option... Should I replace only Pentium 4 HT or can i put any 478 socket processor? like celeron, mobile pentium and so on..
3. Does the CPU processor and the laptop processor differ? meaning Can i buy a processor that fits in a CPU and try to fit it in the laptop? because I could find some refurbished pentium 4 processor (CPU) for 15$ on the internet... though could buy that and finish the job in less money... I dont want to spend 300 bucks and step pack in the technology ...
4. Can i replace the motherboard? i could get some Atom integrated chipsets for less price than spending $300 on replacing another P4 processor...
Thanks for your reply...
any help is helpful ...

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Well, before I answer 1-4, how did you confirm that the processor was bad? Did you test it in a working system? P4 is notorious for overheating, but it's still very rare that an actual processor dies.

I actually confirmed it tro some computer service people... they charged me $60 just to diagonize what went wrong. He said .. there was lots of dust that got sucked in tro the fan vent... so those dust spoiled the processor

Gregory thanks for removing the other post... I will keep that in mind from now..

You're stuck with northwood and prescott socket 478 P4's i'm afraid, that's a desktop 478 socket, not a notebook one.
You can go up to a 3.4ghz Prescott in that socket, but finding one may be a bit tricky.
That said, both prescotts and northwoods have anti-heat-death circuits in them, they are extremely hard (if not impossible) to kill via overheating.
In the alienware world (only other desktop P4 laptops i'm familiar with) if the vents/heatsinks get clogged with dust and the CPU overheats it toasts the motherboard.
