    Hi,
I bought a second hand Dell Inspiron 8600 mainly for surfing the net etc as I'm fed up of being hidden in the bedroom on the desktop.
The computer is working fine apart from the DVD drive, a NEC ND 6500a drive. The drive works during boot up and I can boot from this if necessary.
However the drive does not work once the laptop is on, it is recognised but it states there is an error and the device driver is not installed correctly or is corrupted. In the device manager it showsup but next to it is an apostrophe in a yellow triangle.
I have searched for a new driver on the net but can only get a firmware upgrade, I have also downloaded and installed Dell's restore driver utility. Neither of these work.
Can anyone advice me what to do next?

Try 'delete' the drive from device manager and let it be re-detected.

    Hi,
I've also tried that, windows installed a generic cd-rom driver and it still didn't work. I did debate reflashing the firmware onto the drive to see if this would fix it. But otherwise I'm a bit stuck.

    Hi,
Wow thats fixed it, do you know what the issue is, it just seems like XP wouldn't pick the drive up.
