    Hey,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200. When I press the power button, the laptop powers up. The power button lights up, but, the PC won't boot up. Even the Dell BIOS screen won't show up.

In fact, nothing on the screen shows up, even though the notebooks powers on

I've never had this issue before, but abruptly my laptop fails to boot up. I'm guessing there might be a hardware problem, but does anyone have any ideas on how to tackle the issue?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Does the machine stay on or does it turn itself off? Are there any funny flashing lights? Maybe your screen's dead and you should test it on an external display?

The machine stays on, but does not seem to do anything. The screen does not light up.

For example, when I switch on, I can't hear the hard drive starting up.

With the majority of Dell notebooks the num lock / caps lock / scroll lock LEDs light up in a specific sequence if the computer has a problem during POST (a test that happens when you power up your machine). If nothing is being displayed due to a problem with your computer, you might notice these lights are lit / flashing - if so let us know what lights are doing what - we can then figure out what is wrong.

If this is not happening then it may very well be that your display is kaput. Do you have access to, or have a friend that has an external monitor? Try plugging the notebook into it and see if you get any joy that way.

As Commander Wolf suggested, have you tried it with an external monitor?

Also look very closely at the display; is there any hint of light? Some kind of display problem, perhaps with the backlight is a possibility.

    EDIT

And as Fragilexx just pointed out the 3 main LEDs have a sequence; Power stays on and hard drive/battery flash. The light on the combo drive flashes once immediately after power on. The light above the network port will flash orange if that part of the sequence has been reached.

On the 8200, the num/caps/scroll lights don't flash, or at least they didn't just now when I tried it; surprised me!

When I hit the power button, the orange network light flashes once, the power LED stays on, and does not disappear, and the Num/caps/scroll lock LEDs flash once.

The screen also does not light up.

I guess there is a problem with the POST sequence. Maybe the motherboard is damaged?
