I thought I would start this new Inspiron 7577 thread to avoid cluttering the original Dell Inspiron 7577 thread started by @Sugil1844 that is aimed at more general type questions, comments, and concerns focusing on whether or not to buy a Dell Inspiron Gaming 7577 and new owners' initial impressions.

Feel free to contribute hard data, screen shots of benchmarks, technical details, etc.

My motivation for this thread stems from the fact that there aren't really and detailed teardown pictures or images of the good parts of the inside of the Dell Inspiron 7577 available online. I hope to change that and accumulate the best technical minds and guides here in this thread. My goal is to construct the table of contents in a way that makes using this thread easy to use as well as to reference in discussions to eliminate ambiguity and make it easy to point 7577 owners to necessary resources, downloads, and guides.

QUICK & EASY MOD TO LOWER NVMe m.2 SSD TEMPERATURE:

Ok, so my initial results did not hold as tightly as I had hoped, but I still have a 10C reduction in maximum temps under the harshest conditions, which I am still very happy with. I remembered reading somewhere that ATTO disk benchmark hammers the disk much harder than CrystalDiskMark does, so I switched to that to finalize my results and it definitely drove my temps up a bit more. My ambient room temp is between 27.2C and 28.0C for the record.

The pads are cheap blue silicone type, approximately 1.05mm to 1.09mm thick so I will call them 1mm pads. The label on the package states: "COOLOOdirect30Pcs2...forCPU GPU Heatsinks Made in China" with a barcode that reads: "X001J1AV9Z" and measure: "20mm by 20mm square"

Upon examining the heat spreader plate in its stock configuration from Dell, you can see blue edges peeking out from one side under the heat spreader plate that are sandwiched between the actual memory chips mounted on the PCB and the heat spreading plate itself. There is approximately a 2mm air gap between the surface of the heat spreading plate and the bottom cover of the laptop.

Initially I only added 2 layers of pads and they made minimal contact on the center thermal pads with the foil flashing that is bonded to the inner side of the plastic bottom cover. I placed these very carefully and tried not to handle them too much because I did not want my oils from my skin getting on them or degrading my test results. After running CDM a time or two my temps maxed out at 70C (laptop had been off all day prior to these runs, so the chassis had minimal additional heat soak). The problem was that I hadn't taken a baseline reading or specs with no pads at all so I didn't have anything besides my previous post here to go off of. And I also forgot I had posted stats and screens here previously anyways, lol. So I decided to pull the pad job off and run the test again with no pads. On CDM I saw my temps quickly max out at 89C before CDM even got through its first half of tests. Success was confirmed at this point, but I wanted more hard data and proof to offer you fine folks.

Next I reapplied the same set of pads I had removed and re-ran the tests with CDM. This time with the same set of pads I noticed my temps kind of shooting up unusually compared to the original test that maxed at 70C (of which I had no screenshots for), but still not as bad as when tested with no pads at all. This round of testing with the reapplied pads maxed out at 76C. I assumed that peeling the pads off then reapplying them made them ever so slightly thinner and thus contact with the foil flashing was reduced or inadequate (in addition to possible finger oil contaminations). Upon removing my laptop's bottom cover, all of the pads were actually stuck to the foil flashing pretty much confirming my theory.

So naturally, I went back and peeled them all off once more then reapplied all of the same 2 layers of pads back onto the black metal heat spreading plate then added an additional 3rd layer for a total of ~3mm of thermal pads stacked on the heat spreader. By this point I didn't care so much about the finger oils as the pads had been stretched and handled enough that the results would be what they were- and contact pressure/consistency seemed most important anyhow. I should note that the 2 layers of pads equaling 2mm seemed to sit flush with everything and the 3rd layer that made their collective thickness 3mm had a more satisfying protrusion I was happy would maintain solid contact with the (admittedly flexy) plastic bottom panel with the foil flashing bonded to it. Upon running my CDM tests with 3mm of (reused / reapplied) pads it scored maximum temps of 71C and 75C on the first and second passes respectively. It was at this point I remembered I should have been using ATTO all along- doh!

Next with ATTO fired up, I ran 3 passes with no changes to the padding and saw max temps of 77C / 78C / 79C respectively. It was at this point I decided I was satisfied and did not bother running additional passes.

So my final conclusion was an approximately ~10C reduction in peak temps when running harsh hard disk tests was good enough for me. Compared to no pads at all where the temps spiked nearly instantly during the harshest portions of the CDM test, with the 3 layers (3mm) of pads on the even harsher harshest portions of the ATTO tests the temperatures creeped up much much slower. Overall I call it an easy success.

Now the annoying part is whenever I take the bottom cover off it peels off the pads with it and I don't like assuming they will end up placing correctly on the actual surface of the heat spreading plate when re-attaching the plastic bottom cover to the laptop, so I feel the need to peel them off the cover and reapply them back onto the heat spreader covering the SSD prior to re-attaching the plastic bottom cover back onto the laptop- but that is probably just me being too OCD. Additionally I have considered using thermal compound to smear the area of the foil flashing where the pads like to stick to in order to keep them on the heat spreader plate when removing the plastic bottom cover for other service / modification reasons- mostly just as a hassle and time saver. (I don't expect that to change the results any.) Sorry for the wordy response but I feel the need to be precise and clear with my procedure and results here for obvious reasons.


NOTES:

Crystal Disk Mark was v6 (64bit) and averaged approximately 67% CPU load when performing its tests. (Since CPU is primary heating source in most laptops this may matter more in other machines or configurations- worth keeping in mind in the back of your head imo when performing trials such as these.)

ATTO was v3.05 and averaged between 5% and 15% CPU usage despite being much hotter and harsher on the SSD temps themselves.

My machine's fan was approximately 3k / 3000 RPM during these tests as that is where it idles when I keep my external monitor plugged in and it keeps my dGPU active and prevents sleep states deeper than C3 on my machine.

All tests were performed with my machine set to absolute maximum performance profiles (SST: 0) using ThrottleStop and (Windows power scheme) Bitsum Highest Performance profile. This essentially maintains an all-core minimum of 3.4GHz on my CPU and a maximum boost clock of 3.8GHz. Additionally I was running a stable -0.150V undervolt during all tests as well.

And finally I selected 8GB test lengths with Queue Depths of 9 which I have been under the impression are slightly harsher test conditions than the defaults that CDM and ATTO open up with.

Bump for a great post, grabbing the power manager from this.

 

I have the 4K i7 model in my possession. Is there anything I should be made aware of, particular to this unit? I will be tearing down the laptop after thermal testing and applying pastes that I see fit for this unit. Lots of things in the works of course.

 

I got the i7 4k. I have not been able to play games on it. after a minute or 2 into any game the computer freezes with a horrible sound coming from the speakers and nothing recorded in event viewer. then I have to force restart. I contacted Dell they had my computer for a week, sent it back to me with a fresh windows install on the SSD and a note saying do not install drivers that are not from Dell. I loaded up Diable 3 and just like before I had sent it in, a minute into the game the computer locked up. I reset it and loaded GTA V and same problem. I tried a few other games same results. did a fresh driver install from dell, and even tried the Nvidia drivers. tried different SATA drivers, sound drivers, network wireless/wired drivers. swapped out the SSD and the RAM. Still running into the same freezing with horrible speaker noise.

 

Is your cpu undervolted? that's usually what happens with an unstable CPU.

 

I am not sure how I would check on this computer.

 

If you didn't do it yourself then it's safe to say it isn't undervolted. Dell needs to swap out your laptop or motherboard if it won't run game stock. Have you tried other games?

 

They are sending a tech to replace the mainboard.
I did try several other games with all the same results.
This morning it was giving me artifacts in youtube.

If you want to work from within Windows I would suggest downloading Partition Wizard Free and use it to copy all your partitions from one drive to another.

If you are comfortable making a Linux BOOT CD you can use Ubuntu Live or Gparted Live to manage your partitions quickly.

@Maleko48 can you give me proper steps for installing linux. In my case if I am turning secure boot off,ptt off and raid to ahci; i am unable to boot back to windows in any case however linux is working fine.

Hmm, I can boot into all 3 of my OS's with Secure Boot OFF, PTT OFF, AHCI drive mode. You can try enabling the legacy boot options for traditional MBR/BIOS boot but don't necessarily use them. That was a quirk I discovered when trying to get Win7 to boot though... First I would inspect your current OS installations to find out if you are on a MBR disk or GPT formatted disk. If you are on GPT then you are good. If MBR then I would recommend a complete reinstall from scratch of all OSs on the hard disk.

I also should mention my Linux install has it's own EFI partition where it's bootloader lives by itself (on the same drive as my Windows installations). Try to avoid mixing up boot loaders wherever you can.

 

Hello everyone. I'm a 7577 user for a week now. I have done 2 clean installations of Windows 10 and there is one thing that bothers me. Do you also have speakers issue? In my Dell there is something wrong with sound driver as when I pause a video in Youtube (in Mozilla) or pause (not stop) anything from hard drive that has audio (movie, mp3, etc.), speakers don't turn off. These are still being powered and produce a quiet "hiss". I have good ears and it is a little annoying. Are you having this issue too?
Funny thing is that I reinstalled sound drivers a dozen of times since I got this notebook and 2 installations were actually "successful" - the issue was gone (every pause during playback made speakers powered down and no "hiss" could be heard). But expects those 2 times every installation ended with that issue. I believe I know how to install drivers properly but maybe I am doing something wrong.
I noticed that issue after first clean installation (Windows automatically installed all drivers and I updated them with the packages from Dell site). I was "playing" with installations - annoying thing was that auto updating by Windows and every time I started Realtek installer, it was first removing old driver, rebooting to proceed and at reboot Windows was updating driver back so Realtek installer could never finish installation. Then I made a roll back to Windows based driver and then it was not updating after reset, Realtek finished installation and everything worked ok. I tried another driver, but it did not satisfied me so I wanted to go back to Realtek - but I could not reproduce "successful" installation (no hiss).
I installed clean Windows again, this time with no internet connection and installed Dell drivers before Windows updated them - but I could still hear "hiss". After many tries I managed to made another "successfull" installation - this time it was made by starting Realtek installer, letting it to remove old driver and cancelling installation after reboot - Windows updated driver by itself, but this time I got notification that I have to reboot to finish installing sound driver (Windows notification, Realtek installer was cancelled). After reboot it appeared to be "successful".
I don't know why this happens and why is it so problematic to properly install that driver. I believe it is not hardware issue, because it depends on software and luck(?). Does anybody noticed something similar? Everything is up to date, downloaded from Dell drivers page.
Please help me.

 

This is an ongoing, unresolved Windows 10 issue in general, especially with certain Realtek hardware/drivers. Considering the 7577 audio drivers have been in flux since day 1 due to all the complaints, I would not be surprised if it is being caused by a Dell 'fix' they baked into the driver recently to get around the crackling/popping audio issues. This issue is not present on Windows 7. It is a Windows 10 scheduler / driver issue.

 

What a relief. I tought that mine dell is defective. Interesting thing is that i managed to avoid that issue 2 times during installation of these drivers - so it's possible to work it out.
I tested unsigned driver with Dolby and it sounds much better (expect popping sound). I wonder if there's anyone that could mix those unsigned drivers with stock ones after fix. That would be an ultimate sound driver for me. Even without fix I would love it.

Edit: how about Windows 8.1? Is it better?

Actually I don't have any problem with crackling or popping when using Realtek drivers (only unofficial with Dolby produces those). I rarely use my notebook on battery and maybe that's why. Only the "hiss" is a problem for me now. I'm going to try to install Windows 8.1 on USB external drive and see if it works any better. That whole Windows 10 is some nasty mix of bugs and glitches (I'd still use Win7 if it was fully supported).

 

I am running a full triple boot install myself. Win 10 Win 7 and Ubuntu. They all have their pros and cons.

 

I checked how sound behaves on Windows 8.1. No issues (expect MaxxAudio saying that hardware is not supported - on Realtek driver), no stuttering. What are cons of Windows 7 on 7577? I started thinking of coming back to it. Best OS i ever used.

 

The only thing I haven't been able to get working in Win7 is the power button driver for the fingerprint scanner. But I don't think Win7 supports Windows Hello or whatever the automated fingerprint scanning sign in system is called.

 

So actually no cons (i don't use fingerprint reader). How about audio? I guess it doesn't hiss or pop or crack, but does MaxxAudio install with Realtek drivers? Basic windows driver is pretty quiet as well as Realtek with no MaxxAudio. I wonder how would unofficial unsigned driver for Dolby work...

 

So Finally I managed to dual boot windows 10 and Elementary OS.

Note: I haven't done a clean Windows install like @Maleko48. My setup was default one that came from factory that came from dell for Windows 10 also I was in BIOS version 1.2.

My config:
i7-7700HQ
16GB RAM
128GB SSD, 1TB HDD

Here's how I configured my bios:
1. Turned secure boot off.

Note: No need to turn off PTT and also no need to enable Legacy roms option under bios.

Update: No need to switch RAID ON to AHCI mode.


So here we go:
1. Create a bootable USB using rufus. Since I had my partitions using using GPT scheme (I guess its factory default) I choose "GPT scheme for UEFI" while preparing my USB drive.
2. Restart PC and press F12, select Your "USB Device Name" and your linux will boot . You can try live media or install your linux.
Note: Don't forget to turn off Fast Boot option in windows 10 before doing this step.
3. Install linux as usual. I chose "something else" for partitioning. I installed linux on free space that i created on my hdd.While installing GRUB install it on the hdd instead of ssd(this wont mess up with windows boot loader).


Everything is working fine till now. I will keep this updated.

No abnormalities in audio on Win7. It installs as Realtek but I don't remember if it installs the Waves Max front end. I can update this post in a bit once I check.

Also I just remembered, the intel graphics driver is technically the newest official Win7 driver available from Intel but not really the most up to date driver in terms of active development, at least compared to the rate Win10 drivers are getting updates right now. Not sure if newer drivers can be sourced or modded to work, but I'm not worried about it.

 

I'd be grateful if you updated your post with this information.

 

No Waves Maxx front end on my Win7 install. But there are a couple of files with "waves" or "Maxx" in the name.

I really wouldn't bother with it myself. I cloned my factory install to the 1TB spinner drive that came in the SATA slot and then removed the spinner to add my 2nd SSD to the SATA slot. But once you've got it up and running on a clean install there is really no reason to hold onto the factory install copy. I will use the 1TB spinner as a convenient backup drive using this:

The 1920 x 1080 display on the 5577 that I just got is pretty bad, and I'm debating to go w/a 7577.

So you have to adjust the screen position in order to get the best picture, just like w/the 5577?

My HP x360 Pavilion has a much better screen display than the 5577 does.

The 5577 probably has a TN panel according to what you're telling us.

The 7577 has an IPS panel, but color reproduction is pretty bad, they're washed out, muted. I changed the color peofile of the display, and it helped a bit, but there's a limit to what you can do. Blacks are great, viewing angles too, and brightness is not a problem at least to me.

I might try swapping the panel for something better. It's a pain in the arse to be thinking about it just after receiving the laptop, but oh well.

I went and ordered a refurbished 7577 w/the i7-7700 HQ CPU, 16 GB Memory (2x8 GB Sticks), GeForce GTX 1060, and the 3840 x 2160 IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display.

While I would of been fine w/the 5570, but it was the screen which I simply didn't like.

While cost wise, I could of gotten a 7577 w/the 1920 x1080 cheaper than w/the 3840 x 2160, but after seeing how bad the 1920 x 1080 screen was on the 5577, I didn't want to risk it.

Hopefully there's no issues w/a Refurbished model. I've been lucky in the past, plus it's cheaper, $1148.00, plus tax, vs. brand new w/the same hardware.

i thought installing new bios not a good idea because of limitations at CPU but it is in green zone... i have 1 more question , i already have w10 on computer and my bios is 1.3.2 should i upgrade *bios after format or before format?

Makes no difference when you decide to update your BIOS... it is independent of your O/S installation for the mostpart. You also don't NEED to perform the BIOS update if you don't want to. I'm still on old BIOS myself.

 

but at driver list bios is at green zone , why you are not using it? i was actually ask which drivers should i use to get most performance from 7577

If anything the newest BIOS should be a little less performance due to the Spectre/Meltdown patch. Read up around this site, there's tons of additional info on it.
