btw they updated the bios for the laptop guys

Like I said this thread has been a huge help so I hope I can contribute some information:
tl;dr: Linux prospects on this laptop are looking very good.
I will be installing Linux and dual-booting on this laptop. So far, ubuntu server installed with little trouble. Unfortunately, the generic drivers for the wifi card and nouveau display drivers have been no-gos and had to be updated afterwards. It's possible that updating the kernel to 4.4 (and if you are putting linux on any 6th gen intel computer you should update to 4.4 as it's much more optimized) will fix the wifi driver anyway.
I used a live disk and gparted to shrink the windows partition and rebooted. I was happy to find that windows automatically adjusted to the change (you used to have to pop in a repair disc and nicely ask it if it's ok with the new partition size.) Absolutely no problems with UEFI and grub when installing (though I had to use nomodeset when booting into the live usb.) -
I recently bought this laptop - loving it so far. Picked up a Samsung HL01-102 on ebay (exact model) but it just flashes. Am I missing something or is it just a bad panel? It's more stable if I apply pressure in the connector area so I'm assuming it's bad. Too bad, it looks great for the 2 seconds it's actually on!
-
I'd expect secure boot needs to be disabled to boot any live usb, at which point the whole UEFI and GRUB setup has been well documented. Another way is to boot windows 10 into rescue/repair mode (no disk needed, win8 onwards has this functionality) and resize the FS itself before you even need to boot Linux.
I've been running Linux one form or another since I was 14 (In my 30's now), so I don't expect i'd have any issues, I prefer Arch these days. To be honest though I haven't had a desire to run a Linux desktop on this lappy yet, especially with the nvidia card. I have a 2nd gen i5 Vaio that I run Fedora for that kind of stuff.
For me the i7559 is a desktop replacement for the next year or two (second child on the way so packing up my study for now, buying a bigger house in the near future). -
The LG screen people are getting in their i7559 laptops is not the SPB1, not even close. It is model SPM1 and is in my opinion even worse than the BOE display. Colors may be better but the brightness is just plain bad.
The i7559 I have now came with the LG SPM1 display, I've also had the BOE. I can say that the BOE is superior in the brightness department. Can't find a spec sheet for the rest of the details though.
Either way do not confuse the SPM1 and SPB1 as even being close to the same display. Like all other brands there are very large variances in display quality between displays from the same family. -
Has anyone tried running the laptop with the battery unplugged? Like removing the battery cable and booting it up that way. I should probably just get/build a desktop since I don't move around often but would like the option to take it elsewhere when needed, but I'm worried about damaging the battery from having it plugged in all the time.

Hi guys I have another issue now. Ironically after updating the new BIOS update, which went smoothly, and then restarting the PC. I now get an error notification saying " You've been signed in with a temporary profile." After restarting several times it is still the same and is really bugging me as I can't access all my files. Don't really want to wipe everything as I've installed a lot of programs on here.
Also there was no issue with the BIOS installation so does anyone have any idea?
Thanks
EDIT: IT HAS BEEN FIXED LOLLast edited: Feb 6, 2016 -
Edit: After upgrading to the 4.4.1 kernel and nvidia-352-updates drivers /sys/class/backlight is no longer empty. Currently can only change brightness by manually changing the intel_backlight/backlight file but it's a step in the right direction!
The second or so day I had it the screen turned off right after powering on. I freaked out a bit and checked the connector to the board. It was loose. The display was MUCH brighter afterwards. If anyone has an LG panel that seems dim, I'd recommend unplugging and re-plugging it in.Last edited: Feb 6, 2016 -
So trying to work with this LG Display (Dell P/N KVKF0) 156WF1-SPM1, digging up Dell past reviews, it looks like it was used in the previous gen inspiron 5000 with poor results:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Inspiron-15-5558-Notebook-Review.145836.0.html
Honestly comparing the review though, I think my generation panel fairs better. Colour representation is still very poor but I'm having no problems with brightness or contrast.
Trying the ICC in the review results in a horribly blue screen, so also proves there are differences in the supposedly same panel. One aspect I can agree on is the panel colors are warm and slightly red.
I used windows calibration tool and dropped red approx 5%, leaving everything else default. Now whites are a lot more neutral and the screen is easier to view.
Definitely going to try out the AUO panel when it arrives, just to compare color outputs. Since I am more interested in sRGB results than anything else, I'm hoping the AUO panel works more to my favor, but being cheap from a 3rd party reseller, who knows.. -
However, yes u can take out the battery. Make sure any connectors aren't left hanging. Tape down or watever (i don't think any connectors will be there tho).
But yes, go for it. I live in a part of Africa where we have frequent power cuts, it's not an option for me.
On a final note, i think the safest place to keep ur battery is in ur computer. So maybe just disconnect the connector lol.

I have a problem with a RAM module, I bought the laptop on december and with it an extra 8gb module, specifically this one recomended here http://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperX-Impa...&qid=1454975739&sr=8-1&keywords=hyper+x+ddr3l.
This past week finally bought the second module, after some BSOD trying to discard a problem with the diferent RAM modules, I read it was better to have the same exact RAM for the two modules, soo after it arrives today i tried to install it without success, at the second or third time the computer turned on, and appeared a message telling that i eexceed the maximum memory permited, but before i also had 16gb of RAM, i'm doing something wrong??
Thanks for the replies and sorry for my english. -
I got my 7559 from Amazon yesterday. I'm loving everything about this laptop including the screen and keyboard which some reviewers said were not the best. However I think there is something wrong with my tackpad. It feels loose when I click it, like it's not screwed in properly or something. About 20% of the times when I click using the trackpad it does not register which is becoming extremely frustrating. Is this normal or fixable? I took the bottom plate off yesterday to see if there was anything that could be done, but the trackpad is hidden underneath the plastic chasis and does not seem to be easily accessible. Does anyone know if this is covered under warranty or if Dell will repair this?
-
My only issue with the trackpad is that the cursor is not fast enough by default, since the screen is so large it often takes two scrolls to get to the other side of the screen. Easily changed setting in Windows however. -
URGENT. I wrote some weeks before because I had a problem with the UHD Screen. I returned to dell my laptop and bought a new one.
The problem still happening. When the "elements" "colors" on screen changes the birghtnes of the screen changes quickly the screen "flick".
It happens when i select words in white webpages also. My question is, this is a normal preformance of a laptop screen?.IT also happen in "BIOS TEST MODE" You can access here turning on the computer while you press FN key. Pls I need a quick reply i dont know if i should returned to dell and buy the full hd or other computer. -
-
Here's a video I took of my loose trackpad. Is everyone else's like this also? Or should I return it f new one?
-
Mine definitely doesn't tap like that when pressing it.
-
I Finally fixed itThe problem was the config of the "gamma" in color settings in intel hd drivers. The gamma was default configured to "1" i moved it to "0,7" and the problem was fixed !!

Just as an FIY we ask that an English translation be provided along with the original language post if you are posting in another language. We don't ask for a pro translation or anything like that since everyone's proficiency with the English language is different.

I answered that. with the non-touch version my battery can do about 5 or 6 hours of normal use, obviously is less if I'm playing but when I play i usually have the computer connected to the power. about the keyboard for me is ok once you get use to it, I bought one of this dust protectors and I'm satisfied with the keyboard when is not protected as well as when is protected.
Thanks !! -
@Marco G
Thanks for the translation. Appreciate it, it is entirely fine to reply in Spanish (or was it in Portugese), it's just that not everyone who comes on NBR will know what is being said, hence why we ask for a translation that is legible. It doesn't have to be accurate or anything, as long as we get the gist of it.Marco G likes this. -
Anyone else having this problem of the display drivers crashing?
It says "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, Version 361.75, stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It's pretty annoying and crashes almost all the time on any game now -

Hi to all!
I have recently ordered Dell 7559 and it is on its way but with 8GB RAM and without SSD in M.2 slot so I would like to upgrade it with this. Sorry for not reading all 168 pages of discusion and maybe finding the answers but can somebody tell me this three things:
1. Exactly what type of RAM should I purchase?
It has originaly 8GB Single Channel DDR3L 1600MHz, and I have found on Cruical site 8GB RAM 1866 SODIMM - would that work ok with current spec or should I buy another RAM same as original?
2. Exactly what type of M.2 SATA III SSD is compatible with Inspiron 7559?
Again, I have found on the same website M.2 SATA III SSD but they say it is not compatible with the laptop - what is the catch?
3. For sure I want to have SSD drive and with open M.2 slot would combination M.2 SSD for Win and app and HDD for data be ok or should I go completely with 2.5" SSD drive better? -
This is the SSD I used:

Here is the Memory I used:

Both work for me -
-
1 - The factory RAM is either samsung or hynix (I think recent builds are samsung since that's what I have, all reviews were hynix) 8GB 2Rx8 PC3L-12800S-11-13-F3
This is a 204 pin SODIMM running at 1.35V DDR3L.
I went to the effort of buying the hynix stick as seen in all the reviews when they open up the laptop (HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB), but now have mismatched ram since one is hynix and the other samsung.
It doesn't bother me though since they are both PC3L-12800S-11-13-F3.
2 - It needs to be a 2280 form factor M.2 stick physically. Only SATA3 M.2 drives are supported, so if it says its PCIe or NVMe, they will not work. As an indication, you are looking at around 500-550MB/s write throughput. If it advertises over 1000MB/s write, then its PCIe based and will not work.
3 - My laptop arrived with only the 1TB 2.5" and no M.2. I also bought the Samsung 850 EVO but only 250GB. What I did exactly was:
- Booted laptop for the first time with only 2.5" drive
- Visited Dells website and download section for this laptop, operating system files, download the backup image onto your laptop.
- Insert an 8GB USB stick, format as FAT32. Right click and mount the backup image ISO and DRAG AND DROP the files to the USB stick (trust me, this works!)
- Shutdown laptop. Remove 2.5" and insert M.2 drive.
- Boot and hit F12 and boot from USB. You do not have to disable secure boot or change anything in BIOS at all!
- Follow the usual windows install procedure, you will not need a product key etc.
- Once it has installed, I rebooted it once to check it was happy booting normally from the M.2 drive.
- Shutdown laptop, reinstall 2.5" drive, format with diskpart (You won't need the recovery partition on the 2.5" drive, Dell recovery installs one on the M.2 drive).
- All done!Stilios likes this. -
Thanks guys, thanks mjarett for such extensive post it really cleared some things up for me.
Only question I now have is how exactly to boot windows on M.2 SSD?
You've said you have put backup files on stick but how did you put Windows on the same stick?
I am not much of an expert on this but when I reinstall Windows I use Rufus to create bootable USB stick, and I have come accross many times when laptop has only 3.0 USB ports (like 7559), boot from USB doesn't work it does not recognize my stick...ever. So only option for me than is bootable DVD, but since 7559 does not have one how to boot windows on it?
Sorry for noob question but I would rather learn how to and be prepared when my laptop comes than google it all day and find nothing. -

I used a USB 2.0 stick and it booted fine, just hit F12 and tell it to boot from USB. My USB stick is a Sandisk Switch 8GB.

Can you provide the link to the specific ISO image from Dell maybe? It seems I have a hard time finding it at their website.
-
When you go to the drivers and downloads section on their site, make sure the OS says Win10, for some reason mine defaults to Win7, so you don't see the "Operating System" dropdown. -
I ordered a 7559 tonight. It comes with both a 256GB M2 SSD and 1TB/8GB HDD. I am hoping the 256GB M2 SSD is the primary /OS drive, so I can simply replace the hardrive and add a 1TB Samsung EVO for my Steam games.
Is the 256GB SSD in this kind of set up the primary / OS drive? It would be nuts if the OS was on the 1TB HDD.
Would not have got the 1TB, but came as part of the "deal" 6700QM, 8GB, 1080P, 256GB M2 SSD and 1TB/8GB HDD. Two year accident and warranty, plus $100 gift card for $1078 (counting tax)..... Might try out the 1TB first, since will mainly be plugged in anyway. Not sure though... After SSD ti's hard to go back to HDD. -
The 1TB is woefully slow for running anything of actual use off, but I wouldn't discount it as a storage drive.
Benchmarks I found were only around 65MB/s write speeds which is typical of a 5400rpm drive, but reading it's perfectly fine. -
Any of you have experienced your laptop shutting down automatically during the night? Or irregular shutdown when your laptop is left idle?
Or sometimes it shuts down while you're watching Youtube videos or general surfing, and you have to wait 2-3mins before you can turn it on as the power button is unresponsive after shutting down? -
-
Got mine earlier today. Haven't been able to use it much other than logging in and downloading the Samsung migration utility. Bigger than my old 15.6" HP but far better specs. The keys are a lot clickier than I thought.

I messed up and am getting the UHD version, but wanted the 1080P display for efficiency since will mainly use for games. I will test out and see how looks in 1080P and 1440P, to cut down on the GPU drawing to so many pixel points. Reading that the UHD display overall looks better than the 1080P, but the efficiency for a laptop GPU is more my concern.
My fault on the UHD, since was trying on the phone to get the coupon for the $700 deal applied to a 6700HQ with 256GB version rather than than the 1TB HD version. The rep said there was no stocked version with just the 256GB, but could do the deal with the 256GB and 1TB HDD, plus give me a $100 gift card. Came with two year accident and warranty for $1,078 delivered (I will use the gift card, so net $978).
Maybe 1440P looks good on the display for general use. I know 1080P or lower is needed for most games. Do not want the GPU melting
Catch is scaling to 1440P could be blurry, so the native 1080P display could look relatively better overall anyway. -

I am hoping the GPU is less taxed when scaling to 1080p or 1440p as default instead of 4K. UHD for gaming is overkill for a laptop IMO. Plan on running most 3D games at 720P in order to reduce heat issues anyway.
I wish this was a 1440P display if higher than 1080P. We need 14nm graphics cards before 4K really makes much sense for PC applications and games on laptops. Not even sure 4K makes sense even then. Perhaps for Virtual Reality displays, since they split the resolution into two displays.Last edited: Feb 18, 2016 -
Hello everyone, I just bought my inspiron 7559 and had clean Win 10 without any Dell software. I'm wondering that you have something like Dell Power Manager. Can you tell me ? I heard that when plugged in battery shouldn't be loaded 100%, beacuse it's getting less durable after some time.
Edit: Nevermind, I found solution, battery settings are in BIOS.Last edited: Feb 18, 2016Stanley08 likes this. -
Hey guys ,
I am one of the first believers of 7559but now i am having an issue . Once in a while my laptop just freezes (wont respond to mouse or key board or to even a long press of power button) .The only way to turn it off is to remove or drain the battery . I dont know if its an issue with windows 10 or a hardware issue . I already did a bit of googling but couldn't find anything relevant. Any thoughts
-
I just got a 7559 with the UHD screen because of a coupon Dell had recently for their outlet. I'm new to calibrating and was wondering if there was a page or somewhere else that had instructions that were good for someone new to doing it. The color on this 7559 isn't even as good as the old 17R I have in my signature. I tried reading the first 30 pages of this thread and the last ones but from what I read I didn't really see any instructions.
Thanks -
The 960 gpu should scale to 1440p and still look sharp on this panel, while reducing the gpu load by almost half. The pixel to power ratio for UHD is not proportional to 1080p (does not use four times the power), so uses less relative power per pixel. Catch is there is still four times more, so does drain about 20% more juice at UHD res. Hoping the switch to 1440p cuts that down to less than 10%. Best of of worlds then. Touch display, better color and more resolution, while not being as power hungry. I'll play games at 1080p or less in order to reduce heat related issues. Also planning on having the laptop plugged in more times than not, so not a constant concern for battery life.
