Hi, I posted this topic in "reviews" but another member redirected me here.
    Anyway, here it is:

i just bought a dell 700m and its on its way :) i'm curious how durable this baby is.
i'm planning to carry this notebook with me everywhere in my "laptop backpack" and it will be exposed to normal abuse of daily life such as daily shocks from being transported, frequent opening and closing of the screen, etc. etc.

my question is, for all of you 700m owners, have you ever had any problems so far from normal wear and tear? how is the build quality?

any info will be appreciated. thanks!

Its a CHEAP POS hehe I have one its not bad or aything its a Dell what do you exspect? I'd say if you drop it with-in 3 feet might as well call Dell ASAP i doubt it'll take any fall nicly with cheap silverish chrome plastic casing which feels like a MADE in CHINA product.

In General the hardware its self if top notch kinda like a Computer with a cardboard casing ^_- The looks is OOogly and cheap, but the inside runs like any other notebook.

I dunno if its just me or not I notice some minore scratches from wear I guess... Its right above the Keyboard where the ON/Off switch is that flat edge area gets scratched up for no dang reason.. I keep it in a nice Neopron sleeve and always keep it clean still get scratches thier... o_O?

My first dell laptop was a 8100 and it felt really cheap!
Everytime I pick it up, it creaks and groans from its own weight! I'm hoping my new 700m has a better more solid build.

oh, it's better compared to the 8100 series. I think the fact it's small helps it. You don't get creaks from the screen and it doesn't look like plastic used on a kids toy. It's not rugged by any means, but if you put it in a sleeve in your backpack and take good care it should be fine. I think you made a good choice as far as offerings from Dell. My major gripe with the 700m wasn't so much the build as the battery life for what's supposed to be a portable notebook. 2 hours.

Did you get the extended battery? If so, then you'll get 5 hours. Anyways...

    About build quality.

I find it pretty solid, the screen doesn't ripple when you touch the lid or anything, and the machine has a nice weight to it, and the keyboard is nice and firm. It's more solid than my Compaq laptop. My only beef is the back of the lid, which got scratched when I shoved it into my regular school bag. Be sure to get a sleeve or something to protect it, or else you'll be seeing some scratches!

If you drop it, you'll probably see some horrifying results...but with what laptop will you not? (maybe a thinkpad or something...) Seriously though, the build quality is nothing that should make you have buyers remorse. If you didn't get teh 8-cell battery, call them and add it to your order! :dell:
