I have a 3 yr old Dell 6400 . . . one morning I "turn on" computer and the screen is black/blank . . . the optical drive cllicks . . . fan doesn't turn on . . . cap lock/num keys blink a few seconds then go off . . . status light on far right remains green until I push on/off button and machine turns off (initial results)

With the help of YouTube and forum suggestions I removed back and tried:

    (1) unhooking power supply and just using battery with same initial results THEN removing battery and just using power brick with same results

    (2) taking out both memory sticks / installing one at a time / installing in opposite ports, etc . . . did NOT fix problem

    (3) removed fan and cleaned thoroughly . . . did NOT fix problem . . . removed fan and powered on with initial results

    (3) removed hard drive and powered on with initial results

    (4) removed wireless card and powered on with initial results

    (5) unhooked lcd cable and powered on with initial results

    (6) reconnected lcd cable and powered on with initial results

    (7) removed the cmos (coin cell) battery and currently it isn't connected

Suggestions on how to proceed????? I haven't tried connecting to external monitor.

    Thanks so much!

Did you try taking out the CMOS battery as well as the main battery?

I editted original post since your question.... but yes to both .... I'm no technie by any stretch of the imagination, from what I've read the coin battery just keeps track of the date & time. Is that all?
