So I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 with the GMA 950 integrated chip.
The driver was dated November 2006:
    Display Devices
    ---------------
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
    Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
    Chip type: Intel(R) GMA 950
    DAC type: Internal
    Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27A2&SUBSYS_01BD1028&REV_03
    Display Memory: 224 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 0 MB
    Shared Memory: 224 MB
    Current Mode: 1280 x 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
    Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
    Driver Name: igdumd32.dll
    Driver Version: 7.14.0010.1114 (English)
    DDI Version: 9Ex
    Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Date/Size: 11/15/2006 19:07:56, 2105344 bytes
    WHQL Logo'd: Yes

    So I went to intel's http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2301

and downloaded the latest driver for Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, which is my system. However when I downloaded it and tried to install I was met with an error message.

I then went to Dell's site and downloaded the driver for my system. this installed, but despite being dated May 2007 it turned out it's actually an older driver than my original one.

Now I don't know how to get the original one back.
Can someone point me to a link or perhaps Intel or Dell's site for the latest driver?

    Thanks a million

do you have some dirver sofe cd that Dell give you, when you buy the notebook?try to find dirver from that cd.
if not,you can thelephone the dell and ask for the last driver.
If I were you,I will use that driver,no matter last or no.because it has quite little help for us,some times old driver proform more excellent than last one.
    good luck

Alemaker: That Dell driver is older than the one that was installed with my computer, whereas when I try to install the intel one i am met with the message "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer"

Just wondering, why wouldn't the driver be validated for my computer?
Seems strange, it's definitely the driver I'm looking for.
So if you buy a Dell computer, does this mean I have to get all the drivers from Dell's site?

Not exactly sure about Intel-but do know for a fact, with discrete gpu drivers, Dell modifies the manufacturer driver to their own internal specs. They also change the .inf file to specify installation. My new 1520 is exactly this way-I can't go to nVidia's site and grab the latest driver. It has to come from Dell ***
***There luckily,in my case, is a workaround for nVidia drivers at laptopvideotogo's website. I know that doesn't help you with Intel, but that looks like what Dell did with Intel's graphics driver too, considering the error message you are getting
