    hi, ive got a dell inspiron 6400 with 2 drives, a C: 10gb and D: 60gb

how do i format these properly?

ive done both by reinstalling windows and choosing to format then reinstalling windows,

the problem is on the c: drive when ive formatted nearly all of the 10gb allotment is used up,

surely windows does not take up so much space,

so how do i format it / reinstall windows and still have space left on the c: drive?

    andy

When reinstalling windows, delete all partitions (c: and d: are partitions, not physical drives, a partition is like a virtual piece of your hard drive) and create one new partition. There should be an option like that when selecting the drive/partition where you want to install Windows (XP and Vista, the latter under the advanced options).
