    Hi everybody,

I've recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 6400 and I must say I'm pretty much pleased with it :) . This notebook doesn't get hot in the CPU area, the battery is cold as ice, the only disturbing thing is the heat generated on the right side, which radiates through the keyboard and the upper right side.

As I've seen on this forum, many users have reported that it gets hot on that portion, above the hard disk...that's true for mine too.

I've been running some HD temperature monitoring tools and it's normaly around 50 degrees when under light usage; on other other laptops (various manufacturers and models) the same temperature feels much cooler on the top of the case than on my inspiron...I can only blame the design of the case for this (?!).

And this leads me to my first question: since it's my first notebook, I'm not sure what a "normal" hard disk temperature is for such computers. Mine has reached 58 degrees Celsius under heavy stress (the room I'm using it in is pretty hot too, not sure how much, but outside there are 35 degrees - damn this summer :( ).

I'd like you to tell me how hot other HDs get after using a while..

The second issue (on which I didn't find much info on the forum) is that of the Owner Tag. I've seen this thing in my BIOS and it's "{not set}". Is there a way to place my name in there? Can it be altered in case the notebook gets stolen ?

Thanks in advance for any reply! :)

About the BIOS thing, don't worry about this.

The first issue, don't worry aswell. The CPU can hold up to 70 C and the MB(case) up to 60 easily. My notebook is on my knees since 3 hrs now and it's pretty hot under there but not that much, cpu & mb are at 44 deg. It doesn't go over that, I rarely touch the 50 C but it's no biggie. I suggest you get a cooling pad for youre notebook, it should solve your issue.

    Hello!

I have the same problem too, but mine is the laptop gets hot on the CPU area, under the keyboard. I don't know why its very hot. Even the room temperature is a decent 26 C. I tried installing a HDD for notebooks and noticed that my temp is 46 C with a max of 49 C.

Is it alright if I use my laptop for several hours, for example 6 hours straight in an air-conditioned room? Because I am afraid that it will crash down sooner or later if I use it at long duration often.

Aside from the cooling pad solution, is there any option to solve this problem?

well, i've reached the conclusion that they kinda are normal temperatures for a laptop's HDD (except my 58 degress...but i blame that on the overheated room... )

@deathfist: if you worry about overheating, get a temperature monitor software and see how the situation evolves over time; i don't think there's any problem using your laptop for six hours, as long as the operating conditions fit the ones specified by the manufacturer (i.e. room temperature, humidity, power voltage, stuff like that... :D )
