I've had my trusty Dell Inspiron 6400 since 2006 and it's still going strong, but over the last couple of months I've noticed that the screen doesn't appear to be as bright as it used to be. It's as if the brightness isn't set to full, but when you try to increase it you discover it is at full brightness.

Can LCD screens become dimmer over time and would a replacement screen fix this?

Hi. It could be down to one of two things.

    1) a faulty backlight or 2) a faulty inverter.

When a notebook screen is dim, the majority of the time it is a result of a faulty inverter. Unfortunately, the best way to determine which is causing the screen to be dim is through process of elimination by trying either a new LCD screen or a new inverter and seeing which solves the problem. I highly recommend you purchase an inverter first as inverters are less expensive

    Thanks.

It's not really dim, just not as bright as I remember, like the Fn brightness setting is a couple of notches below full.

I've got an E1505, same reduced brightness. I'm still under CompleteCare, but I don't know if this counts as a "problem" that they'd actually fix, since it still lights up. Couldn't hurt to check, though.

(Out of curiosity, do you use an external monitor with your 6400? and if so, do you see random flickers on the LC every so often. I swear it's there, but Dell says I'm crazy)

I'm a long time out of warranty, but would rather pay for a new screen, if needs be, than buy a new laptop.

I've only connected my laptop to an external display a few times, but never noticed any flickering.
