    I'm having to re-build my 600m after my Hitachi hard-drive self-destructed. Now I'm trying to figure out which drivers to install. My 600m shipped on March 2005. Part # C4816 Processor, 80536, Pentium M Dothan, 725, Pin Grid Array, B1.

    Dell sent me a new hard-drive, Windows XP, and a Resource CD (with drivers).

    I've installed the XP. Oddly, under My Computer -> Manage -> Computer Mangement -> Properties -> General, it says "Computer: Dell Latitude D600 Intel Pentium". But I have an Inspiron 600m. (Is that the same as the Latitude D600?)

    The Resource CD has a drop-down menu for "System Model", and lists the following choices: Inspiron MXC061, Inspiron MM061, Inspiron 1501, Inspiron MP061, MXC062, MXP061, and MXG061.

    My question: How do I find out which system model I have???

    I do not see the "My System" feature that is mentioned in the help file, that supposedly enables the media to automatically detect the hardware and operating system.

    My Device Manager shows the yellow question mark for Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader, PCI Modem, Video Controler (VGA Compatible), and wifi.

    I took a guess and installed the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, because I didn't see any other choices for wifi. My system says it's connected to a wifi signal, but my browser won't connect. 215 packets sent, 255 received. I tried Repairing the wifi, no luck. Without internet access on that computer (I'm using my desktop to type this), I can't autodetect what hardware it has. (Nor can I update my antivirus program.)

    Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    The D600 and 600M motherboards are interchangeable. They are basically identical save for the BIOS. You can supposedly flash a 600M BIOS to a D600 board and vice-versa, but I have never verified this myself. It does not matter which of the various board models you have; they are all functionally identical.

    The D600 never shipped with a 3945 wifi card. You will either have something in the Intel 2000 series or a Dell branded Broadcom chip. If you open up the smaller hatch on the base, you can take a look at your wifi card. It will state, on the card, whether it is made by Intel or Broadcom.

    Chances are that the drivers on the resource CD are out of date. Once you know the wifi model, you can download the appropriate driver from the Dell site. All other drivers for the 600M and D600 are the same, regardless of board model or whatever.

    EDIT:

    R90698 -> Sigmatel Audio
    R104084 -> Conexant Modem
    R113575 -> ATI Rage Pro
    R114079 -> Intel Chipset
    R114084 -> RICOH Reader
    R133052 -> Broadcom Ethernet

    R143355 -> All Broadcom Wifi
    R105328 -> Intel 2100 Wifi
    R155386 -> All other Intel Wifi

    Thanks for your help!

    I discovered that I'd installed the wrong Dell System Softare revision, I'd used Rev.A24 when it should be Rev.A21. Fixing that allowed me to get internet access, which solved things.

    I discovered on another tech forum that "Dell Inspiron 600m laptops usually come with integrated Broadcom 570X Gigabit controller."

    The 570X driver is listed as either System Model MXG061 or MXP061. (Or maybe the Resource CD they shipped me is outdated, and just doesn't list the 600m, which is the hardware I have.)

    Anyway, I've gone through Microsoft Update and everything seems to be working fine. All the yellow question-marks are gone in Manage Devices.

    One thing: under Devices it does list "Intel(R) PO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection," and that device driver seems to be working fine -- I'm using the 600m to type this, using wifi.

    My IE seems to hit a fatal error and crash often, but I haven't spent time on figuring out why and it doesn't seem too serious.

    Thank you again for your help, VERY much appreciated!!!!
